Welcome!

Which doctor are you seeing?

The MRI is standard procedure - they have to do that to find out if it's

congenital or idiopathic.

The casting process does involve being under general anesthesia. They

administer a large dose of muscle relaxers and put the upper and lower parts

of the body in sort of traction to gently manipulate the spine back into

position, then cast it there. They also use a breathing tube to protect the

airway. But, as far as treatment for scoliosis goes, it is the most gently,

lowest intervention. Braces usually do not correct - and usually do not

correct for rotation as well as the curve.

Casting is definitely the BEST course of action in a case of progressive

infantile scoliosis. If you are seeing a properly trained surgeon, with the

proper pediatric frame, you're in good hands.

My son has grown tremendously since he was first casted. He is 19 months

and wears a 3T. He's gone from 95th percentile in height to way off the

charts. He learned to walk in the cast, and now runs and climbs in it. It

is far easier for him to move in than it was in his brace. His curve was

70° upon diagnosis and he is now down to 38° out of a cast and 22° in a

cast. I have no doubt that this is a cure for us and we are so grateful for

the opportunity.

If I can answer any other questions, please let me know.

Sandi

HI Ethelyn! Welcome to the group...... It really is helpful to have the

support! Did you decide that you are going to cast? Which doctor are you going

to?

ethelyn billones wrote: Hello everybody,

I am Ethelyn I learned about this group while I was surfing the net for my

daughters conditon. She is 3 1/2 y.o. and was diagnosed to have scoliosis. This

was last Feb .27. Actually the scoliosis xray was done last Oct. 2007 and I was

told that the angle is 32 degrees. It was an incidental finding when she had a

chest x-ray; that means she has no other noticeable signs/symptoms. About two

days ago though I already noticed that she is leaning to her left.

The plan is for her to have a body cast which will be done under general

anesthesia and this will be done on April 4. This really makes me worried

considering that she is young and has to undergo this procedure. The orthopedic

surgeon said adjustment will be done every 2-4 months. On May 5 MRI of the spine

will also be done because she also has neurofibromatosis. This again will be

done under IV sedation.

I am wondering how did your babies " deal " with the cast on their body 24/7 or

should I say how did you make your babies be able to take the ordeal. Are there

anybody who had a good experience with braces? How's the growthof your children.

Will it not be stunted by the cast. Is there anybody who's child has also

neurofibromatosis.

My daughter was only seen by one orthopedic surgeon and when I expressed a lot

of concern for the procedure her casting was moved from March 18 toApril 4. For

fear that further delay might worsen her case I did not decline the upcoming

procedure. However, I have a schedule with another orthopedic surgeon on March

20. I am not sure what will the result be for this second consult with another

doctor.

Thanks lot everybody. I have read a lot of messages and all of your messages to

everybody are very supportive and informative.

Sincerely,

Ethelyn

Hello Shar;

We have quite a crew of people with Stills and are so willing to be

supportive and helpful the best way they know how. As I have said

before I do not have Stills but have very close friend that has. So

I am not much

help in that area.

But I have experienced a flue bug myself lately. It just hit me

suddenly with no warning. I wasn't sure what happened. But last

night I had it confirmed that it is one of those bugs that runs rapid

and hits a lot

of people when they least expect it. It isn't pleasant - I know. I

just thought I would extend my concern for you and do hope you will

get over soon. In fact you may be feeling a little better by the

time you receive this.

I think it lasts about 24-48 hours. Anyway - my prayers are with you

and hope you will be able to pick up soon.

Sincerely with hugs Lulu

I was reading a cool study yesterday about Lyme testing on dogs. They would treat the dogs by giving them Lyme Dz then treat them with amoxicillin, doxy, and so on, but the one thing I got from it was exactly what you mention-they seemed in many to get the actual acute illness okay, but couldn't rid the toxins. I will try to find it again and post it.> Had adrenalectomy Oct 2006 after having AVS show adenoma was > definitely producing excess aldosterone and other adrenal gland was > not. More dogs with lyme than Humans so they say. I actually had a pt with Lyme heart disease. Later he told me his dog had been dxed and rxed for Lyme before he got sick the second time (patient).CE Grim MDI was reading a cool study yesterday about Lyme testing on dogs. Best place to go for lyme is Columbia University Medical Center. You must be

close to there.

I'm curious as well - seems too good to be true to me too. Sounds neat

though!

" soluble in water and oil " - which means they're not soluble in

alcohol. They are OK for oil-based products. Flavor extracts are

nothing new. In fact, I think that side of the industry probably

has more sales than the fragrance side. Also, they might not have

the diffusive properties we're used to with fragrance materials.
