Very interesting article in the latest issue of Harvard Magazine called

Doctored Research, with such quotes as:

We're getting a distortion of our medical knowledge...We look for new

knowledge only in areas that offer the greatest potential return on corporate

investment, while other knowledge is strongly suppressed.

The commercialization of research directly affects patient care....

because doctors have been through medical boot camp, and they've been

drilled to believe in the journals.

80 percent of the people who write these guidelines (for drugs) are

getting paid by the drug companies...and 59 percent are getting paid by the

manufacturers of the very drug they are considering.

For example, when a panel from the American College of Rheumatology

recommended Celebrex and Vioxx for arthritis treatment, all four doctors on

the panel had financial relationships with at least one of the

pharmaceutical companies involved.

The medical enterprise pretends to care about our health, but it cares

much more about corporate well-being.

(The article refers to a book coming out titled Pretending to Care.)

>Is that the November-December issue?

I expect so. I haven't gotten my copy yet, but expect to today. My friend

in NJ received hers already.

I usually am so upset by that magazine and the Gazette's slant, so I give

my copies to my father without reading it. But since my friend tipped me

off to this unusual article, I'll check it out. Will be interesting to see

what kind of rebuttals it gets!
