Guest guest
> Welcome to the world of " botanical " perfumery! Best, Maggie Hi Maggie, everyone: I remember when, in May, 2005, the term botanical perfumery came into play. I won't got into the history, because it's a bit suspect. At the time, natural perfumery was the term everyone used. The vegan aspect of this thread brings up some points that highlight why I believe that many using the term botanical are not botanical perfumers in the strictest sense (no relation to the 2005 coining of the term, btw.) If you use labdanum, mitti, soil tinctures, beeswax or any animal product in your perfumes - you are not a botanical perfumer, since those products are not botanical in nature. You are a natural perfumer, don't you agree? Otherwise, a vegan or someone who otherwise wishes to avoid animal products may purchase your perfume under false pretenses. A truly botanical perfume would be vegan. It would only contain absolutes, concretes, co2s, and essential oils from plants. Now I'll wait for the question about why I put labdanum in the animal category. ;-) To further up the ante on full disclosure: even kosher oils, which are supposedly free from insects and animal parts, are not. Well, the majority are not. I cannot, as someone who gardens and has a background in agriculture, believe that any harvest of plant material does not inherently contain some insects that rode along into the extraction vat. PS: in full disclosure I will also say that I have registered the website botanicalperfumers in case the USA govt. comes down on the use of the term " natural " and we - and others - can't use it. I will, however, have a disclaimer as to the issues I mentioned above.
