Guest guest
If someone a couple has a credit card and are separating, and one half of the couple is responsible and the other half is not [i.e. wants to limit out the card by cleaning out Walmart because they need to decorate their future double wide when they end up in the trailer park that is their destiny.] Looking for options for the responsible person prior to filing for divorce: Can the “responsible” person remove the other signer from the credit card so that the other person cannot use it and stick them with more debt? Or can they simply report their card stolen and have the account frozen? Or can they close the account and gradually pay off the debt? -- I thought it might be a good discussion for identity protection anyway. It’s not for me, it’s for a friend of my office manager. E. Guest guest
When I separated, my husband and I each contacted our credit card companies and asked that the other be removed from our accounts. One company required that we close the account and then open a new separate account. It is very wise to immediately separate all of that out. I think unless you close the account, that the person who keeps their name on the account, then becomes responsible for the entire amount due. I believe it's possible to close the account and gradually pay off.Tell her good luck!
