jars for saurkraut - hermetically sealed OK?

I bought some glass jars with the flip top lids and rubber rings (hermetically

sealed?). If I do my kefir saurkraut or milk in them, are they likely to

explode? I've been doing the kefir milk in them and notice a big release of gas

when I open them. Just about to do my saurkraut and started to wonder...
