Guest guest
This makes me sick!!!! I was so glad when the bill passed outlawing horse slaughter in this country. Now they're trying to crack down on the people trying to smuggle them across the borders into Mexico and Canada. But this makes me sick. Guest guest
I've told people before, and I'll tell them again. Technology is a great thing, and a good idea to keep up with it. But schools need to get back to the very basics. If they don't, we will have morons running the country. We didn't have calculators when I was in school. They didn't come along until I was in college, and were very well out of the price range of most people. I've always thought, it was better to use the calculator that I was born with. Sue PS And school systems are wondering why more, and more of their tax levy's are failing. Guest guest
Well, there's a lot to be said for both sides. But it is very important to keep up with technology so we don't get left behind. My daughter's school district must be doing something right, they have a 99% rate of students graduating (in other words not dropping out) and most go on to college. If I was running that school district, I wouldn't change a thing. Guest guest
Here the students who need extra help with language arts (reading, writing, grammer, etc.) are pulled out of their normal classes during that period and go to a special class where they do receive special help. Any student who has a special need is pulled from the class and given special attention. I personally think parents should take an active part in their children's education. I was fortunate to be able to stay home when my children were in school and I worked in their classrooms and worked with them at home. When my oldest daughter started going to computer classes at home, we went out and bought a computer so there would be one at home. And we were poor. My children were brought up knowing that they were expected to attend college, it wasn't an option. They are both around 30 now, but even back when they were in elementary school it was quite evident to make it in this world you would need a college education. I know people say college isn't for everyone, but it was our version of tough love. They were expected to go or they could prove to us they could make it on their own. Fortunately they went and have great paying jobs. And the one who caused the most trouble (thought she'd never graduate college, went to 6 different ones) is now, on her own, working on her Masters. Teachers make a huge difference in the students education, but they really have their hands tied as to what they have to teach. My daughter wasn't happy when she changed school districts, she didn't like how they taught the students at her new school. She went along with it the first year and then she figured out how to incorporate some of the skills from her other school district, and other teachers at her current school are also using them. You just have to check the schools out when you move before you buy/rent a house in a school district especially if you have a special needs child or a gifted child. I went to the School Board one time when we moved because my daughters were in the gifted program and the new school district 'had a rule" that new students couldn't enter the gifted program until they had been there for one year. After 1 month of sheer boredom on my daughters' part, I elevated my complaint. it took about another month to get them moved to the proper classes. This is why I say parents should take a part in the education of their children. We live with them and the teachers do have a lot of students and your child is likely to slide in under the radar if you don't stick up for them. Her students are children of local sports teams, like Cowboys, Stars, Mavs, and CEOs of large companies. She has students who take off to audition to be in movies, commercials, etc. It's like a whole different world! She was working there when she was pregnant and had her baby, my grandson. Guest guest
Here is something else to stimulate your minds (and yes, I'll be the first to say that I'm an unschooler). Why is graduating a measure of success? Ditto for going to college? I have an IQ that easily qualifies me for MENSA, yet I never finished college. I have the chance to go to medical school now (without first having a BSc), but am not doing so. Despite all this, I've worked in medicine, translation, travelled around the world, taught as a university lecturer, taught English and Montessori to Arab royalty, and have two amazing daughters. I have to say that looking back on my life, I consider myself quite successful. Despite my recently loosing my ability to walk, job offers to return to the Middle East (where disabilities are still viewed negatively) still stands. I'm starting up my own business and most important of all, I'm happy. My children (if I can help it), will never set foot in a traditional school and never be taught things (for whatever standarized test) just to help the school look good. They will not study for SATs unless THEY decide that they want to get on a career path that requires them to get into college, or they'd like to do it 'for fun'. As I told my ex the other week, I'd much rather see my daughters become happy plumbers than unhappy doctors. This is just my opinion and I in no way intend on imposing it on others. I invite you to see my blog (in signature). Have a good day!  WOW that is amazing with that % of graduates!! Way to go!! Guest guest
You are definitely the exception rather than the rule. Without a college education there are too many doors closed to you. That's wonderful you managed so well. But I can say, I would not want my children, grandchildren, etc. being taught anything in school by someone without a degree from a college. There's more to college than just the education. And my children also have very high IQ's and could be in Mensa if they chose to do that. Both of my daughters were hired before they even graduated from college. They started sending out resumes and interviewing and landed positions that required a degree and their employment was dependent on them showing proof of graduation. My daughter is a teacher, has taught in 2 different school districts and both had requirements. And of course, the requirements are geared to make sure the students do well on the test. The schools are at the mercy of the State, if the schools don't meet a certain standards on these tests they can loose some of their funding. My daughter teaches 5th grade and I do have to say I am shocked at some of the things they are learning and expected to know. A lot more than when I was in 5th grade!!! Guest guest
I agree with you. I have long been working on my daughter who turns 27 in November, to get back into school the fastest way she knows how. Her daughter has just started kindergarten FT (all day). My daughter has the brains, the grades, and the talent. She's very into art. Getting into OSU should not be that hard. She knows, about the grants, loans, and scholarships. I have also told her, that by going back to school, and graduating, she will make a better life, not just for herself, but for her daughter, and husband as well. Everyday I pray to God, that she will listen, and do this. Sue http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/betterbodybuddies/?yguid=137091429 http://www.peternoone.com. Guest guest
I hope she listens to you Sue. The day is coming when you won't be able to get a decent job without a degree. We're almost there now. And a lot of jobs start you at higher pay if you have a degree. Guest guest
lol.....never know, that might just work!!! I have done everything I can think of about getting her back to school. I have even told her that The Bureau For Vocational Rehabilitation would probably pay for for it, since I believe she qualifies. I think my son-in-law qualifies too. the only other thing I can think of is to go down in person, and give them both a good swift kick in the rear.
