He's just been told by his coach that he has to lift weight for his sport

(judo) because he wants to compete seriously.

Now, being a beginner, when is an appropriate time to move him to Olympic

lifting? Does he need to spend X amount of time doing general preparation

training? (if so, what is X? How much time?)>>

** I wouldn't think it is a matter of time but a matter of proficiency that

will dictate progression. I would probably just make sure he is proficient

in the basic free weight lifts such as the squat, etc and introduce simple

lifts

and increase difficulty as he becomes proficient. I would start with some

hybrid Olympic lifts such as pulls, overhead squats, Romanian deadlifts etc.

The progress I use is learning position and sequence, then speed and finally

weight. In my experience the biggest mistake is to add too much weight

early.

A few good books are :

Mel Siff's " Supertraining " and " Weightlifting Encyclopedia " by Arthur Drechsler.
