I would probably just make sure he is proficient in the basic free weight lifts such as the squat, etc and introduce simple lifts and increase difficulty as he becomes proficient. I would start with some hybrid Olympic lifts such as pulls, overhead squats, Romanian deadlifts etc. The progress I use is learning position and sequence, then speed and finally weight. In my experience the biggest mistake is to add too much weight early. A few good books are : Mel Siff's " Supertraining " and " Weightlifting Encyclopedia " by Arthur Drechsler.
