Probably of French origin as you go back....But my grandfather came down from Canada to the UP of Michigan....And there are a number of Bourbonnais in Canada still... When my grandpa came down, he dropped one of the " n " s from the spelling....Don't know why.... There's a town in Illinois named Bourbonnais founded by another ancestor... A lot of European history is laced with royalty of the House of Bourbon...Which is probably how that isle got the name....Someone once mentioned to me that the Bourbonnais surname was a " place name " , as you mention in the case of the islanders.... You will find some essences that refer to " Bourbon " ...again an island reference.... And you will also find that Bourbon whiskey's name is in a round about way connected to French assistance during the Revolutionary War...Bourbon County named after the family... One of these days I might go digging back and see what all I uncover... Might be interesting.... -- W. Bourbonais L'Hermite Aromatique A.J.P.
