Hi, Sierra.

Arava seems to hang around for a long, long time. I think it's possible, but

I really don't know. It's hard to find data on this point. Did you take the

loading dose or just the same amount each day from the start? How much

daily?

I'm not saying that you will flare, just that you have to consider the

possibility. I am simply playing the devil's advocate. Somebody has to!

Damage can occur without outward signs. Even the x-rays may not catch joint

damage in its early forms (MRI and ultrasound are better). By forgoing a

DMARD, you are removing slowing/prevention of damage from your treatment

equation.

If you have a flare or discover damage, then you might be back to square one

(even if you haven't been there before) - prednisone and/or a biologic

and/or a conventional DMARD - to try to put the fire out instead of

preventing the fire from occurring in the first place. It may never happen.

I hope it doesn't. It's a good sign that your RA has had a mild disposition.

As you are aware, even with treatment, damage can occur; however, although

there is no way to accurately predict each individual case, your odds are

better with DMARDs. The current research points to better outcomes with

early, aggressive treatment and tight control rather than the older " wait

and see " approach which only escalated the medications as things got worse

(the pyramid strategy).

That's why there has been much discussion about a possible " window of

opportunity " early in the disease course. The idea is that you don't want to

give your immune system the chance to gear up and get into a terrible cycle

that is very difficult to tame.

You mentioned not wanting to bombard your body with sulfasalazine, but your

RA may take the opportunity during a DMARD break to assault your system,

your joints and beyond. Again, it doesn't have to happen. I hope it doesn't.

Hi ,

I truly appreciate your thoughtful and well-informed response. I

wish I could've had a conversation like this with my doctor on

Thursday! I put forth the questions, but she didn't seem able to

answer them directly. Also, she seemed to already know " the plan "

(sulphasalazine) before she examined me and talked with me. Made me

feel like I had no role whatsoever in my own health maintenance. My

body is more than a machine! Most of us have experienced how our RA

is affected by stress, overextertion, or certain foods. The whole

picture needs to be reviewed--not just a checklist of which meds were

tried and which ones remain on the list. My rheumy does not have the

time (nor the inclination) for this kind of doctoring, it seems.

I've been re-reading Dr. Weil's book " Spontaneous Healing, "

an excellent book.

it last nite for 10 hrs. and no problems......We feel so blessed! WE go

back July 18th for a X-ray to make sure the brace is doing it's job! Thank

I totally agree! Is there a chance their email could have got hacked?

That happened once to someone I went to college with...she left her email

open on accident while on a public computer & someone got on & thought it

would be funny to write a raciest comment & email it to our class through

her blackboard account. The poor girl almost got kicked out of school

People can do dumb stuff, but if that really did come from her lets please

remover her from the group.

No Amber it was not hacked! knew who she was and has now banned/blocked her..or he..who knows! It was just like this huge slap in the face when I read it this am. Especially after the great news we got and Sierra going to a brace. WE just wanted to share and let people know that Casting works...it is very difficult but it works! ISOP, , and Dr. K changed Sierra’s life in a great way! Thanks! Kristi Plus, She and I exchanged a few personal e-mails after the fact so I think she got MY MESSAGE LOUD & CLEAR! LOL! I am so excited for you guys! You ran the distance...don't let a crazy

cast even the smallest shadow on that! I can't wait till we are in your

shoes one day! Reading your emails through all this has helped me know

that it really is possible! Celebrate it big!! & oh she is such a darling

in her photos! You have to dish... was that woman as terrible in her

Oh Yeah! She tried to be but I do not think she knew what she was getting herself into!!!! Just say I will not repeat on here! She has to be feeling pretty low right about now! Amber, Sierra had 9 cast and it took 2 years and IT can be DONE and it has all been worth it! She is my little Doll....the best personality! Sierra is going to do BIG things in her life! Thank You! Hey Joy! You are so Welcome! I remember very clearly on March 30 2010 I was told that Sierra had Scoliosis and she was only 11 months old! You talk about a totally Freak out....I cried, screamed, about everything you could think of. Since we live down in L.A. (Lower Alabama) the hospital had never seen an infant with scoliosis much less on how to measure her curve! It rocked our world! I got on the web and found ISOP & CAST and called me that very same day and filled me in on the whole Mehta Casting Method! put me in touch with DR. K in Birmingham, Alabama and we were in to see him within a week! He X-rayed Sierra and said she had a 34 degree curve and we needed to cast immediately.....I was like....WHAT????? We can’t do this!!! I can’t put my Baby through this and plus she has a older Sister Summer that is just 22 mo. older...What is this going to do to our quality of life...especially nearly everything we do down on the Coast involves water!!!! UGH!!!! We made it through 9 cast and 2 years and I would not trade it for the world! It was not easy and I do feel like I aged and got some grey hair...although I color and no one will ever know it...lol! Just hang in there.....Casting is doable and it does work...that is why I want to post positive things to. Yes we are getting great results. We are very blessed! Reading everyone else's stories gives us and all the other families dealing with this, hope. This is difficult journey and it's great to have an "extended" family to lean on. We are so appreciative to , ISOP and all of you.
