Guest guest
A member of our local WPF group posted this to our site and gave permission to cut and paste it. I had never heard of plastics containing BHT and BHA so I figured many others also hadn't. She is very, very reactive to petrochemicals and cannot even tolerate eating animal products that have been fed feed with artificial vitamins in them. I think this is very relavant stuff so I posted two of her e-mails. This long but worth the read. Lynn " Because the added vitamins of Vitamin A and D contain BHT & BHA which are powerful petrochemicals that then get in the milk which I then react to because I am sensitive to petrochemicals. Any processed man-made concoction has additives in the additives that don't have to be on any label. The BHT & BHA are considered secondary additives and do not have to be listed on the ingredient label and ARE NOT EVER listed on the ingredient label. AND yes, store bought cereals that have Vit. A & D added do not have to list BHT & BHA in the Vit A & D. This is also the case for alfalfa pellets with added vitamins. Alfalfa pellets, even without any added vitamins, are heated at ultra high temperatures to get it to stick together that it can have little food value left, and any ultra heated food is suspect having gone through chemical changes which makes it carcinogenic and disease producing. " Go ahead and cut and paste and cross post, that is fine with me. As for my source, when I first began having problems reacting to food additives, I would eliminate additives and I had some great success cutting out reactions. However, I would still have problems with some foods that seemed to be ok. About that time I joined the Feingold Association which follows the research of Dr. Ben Feingold. He did research on food additives and children suffering from hyperactivity, bed wetting and a number of other symptoms. Through this Association, a LOT of mysteries were cleared up for me. Here is one of the weirdest mysteries that was disclosed through the Feingold Association. In the mid-eighties, I went on a ski trip to Colorado, lived in Nebraska at that time. I make all my foods ahead of time, roast beef and baked stuff and bought organic veggies and fruits. I packed it all in Tupperware and off to the mountains. Well, the first day I got a splitting, pounding headache, very fast pulse and very disturbed sleep. By the second day I was worse and by the third day, was not sleeping at all, very fast pulse and bouts of heart palpitations, constant pounding headache and more. Back home from the trip, went to the Feingold meeting about 2 weeks later and discussed my horrible reactions from eating only the foods that I had careful selected and prepared. Our Nebraska chapter Feingold president asked me what I packaged my foods in. When I answered Tupperware, was told that was the problem, that Tupperware was impregnated with BHT & BHA, that this slowly leaches out into the food AND that is why Tupperware kept foods fresher than other containers. So, was NOT in the way that lid snapped on but in the petrochemical that leached into the food. Of course, that explained why I reached worse and worse with each day, the longer my foods were in the Tupperware, the more BHT & BHA leached into it. Back then, the Feingold Association sent a legal form to companies with products that were in question. The companies that got sent these legal forms were ones that had generated a number of complaints on a national level. The legal form stated that a number of people reacted to their product and gave the company a chance to disclose any 'hidden ingredients' that may cause this. Of course, if the company didn't respond, they admitted guilt so their products got on the 'Do not use list'. Tupperware, however, did respond, sent the form back filled out stating that BHT & BHA were impregnated into the containers. So, long story but short analysis, my body told me that stuff was in there. That's the way I found out that foods in the grocery store with added Vit. A or D also contained BHT & BHA. I reacted to it, asked at the Feingold meeting and sure enough, it contained that petrochemical. Regular milk, with added Vitamin D always had BHT & BHA in it. I would think that has not changed but the label only says Vit. D. Additives within additives are such a lie in our society, in everything from foods to body products. I suppose you know that the majority of body products in the regular market that are labeled as unscented actually contain more volatile chemicals to MASK the chemicals that make up the original stuff BUT they are allowed to label it as 'unscented'. My personal experience with this one is Dove unscented deodorant. We had a guest and I reacted to a smell within minutes of our guest using it in the spare bedroom. It waffled throughout our house, hit my nose and instantly stung my nose and made my head pound. Our guest was shocked that her so called unscented deodorant would contain a scent and not have to be labeled. She had never heard of masking scents. Of course, the masking scent is a scent but just because it was added to cover the original 'ugly' scent of the product, it did not have to be labeled. Many body products contain a masking scent and another scent added specifically to make a certain scent. The base of these scents are petrochemicals and I react badly just using such a shampoo or having to smell such a shampoo. Oh, should say that these products, made from petrochemical base, the base is oil/gas refined some, but that is what it is. Giving it a nickname, petrochemicals, is even misleading. It is simply refined oil and gas that we use in machinery. YUK in that even if I didn't react, putting that in our foods/animal foods and on our body is ludicrous.
