Hi again all,

Back again after 8 weeks of no computer. :-( Week and 6000 messages later

I'll suggest some of the reading I did between computer repairs and

scrambling to get a new one. Noam Chomsky's, Understanding Power will give

perspective to nearly all discussed in those 8 weeks. Guess I wasn't

totally away. :-)

Welcome back into contact Xena.

I get the impression that, in many places, people are still being blamed

for 'failing to change' as individuals, when the real culprit is the

lack of infrastructure support. There is still the same tension that

has always been there, about who will support families who need support,

if the HVs do not.

The old story about being able to free more time by working in different

ways has been implemented in lots of places, but the 'free time' is too

often used to reduce staff numbers or cover vacancies from poor

recruitment, instead of expanding the remit of the HV.

There are some real success stories as well, though, and it is always

good to hear of examples. The other interesting thing is what people

mean by working 'in a public health focussed way.' Would be interested

in hearing opinions about that, as it seems to still be a contentious

phrase.

best wishes
