Guest guest
It's because the nose serves to heat and humidify the air as it enters your body. Breathing through the mouth doesn't condition the air as well and you wind up irritating the passages in your lungs among other things. That's why your nose gets runny in very cold weather. The way your body can deliver more heat to your nose is by delivering mucous since water holds a lot of heat. I have a tendency to start breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth to try and keep the nose from running by sucking it back in but that actually makes matter worse cause breathing out through the nose delivers heat to the nose, the mucous is just for when breathing out doesn't deliver enough heat. I guess mother nature doesn't care if your nose is making a mess. Now that I'm stuck back in Arctic weather after two decades of being in the sunny south, I'm having to deal with -25 C weather again. I've managed to get a Psolar LX cold weather mask which has a contraption that looks like a car air filter that you breathe through, it captures the moisture from your breath and hence the heat and uses it to warm up and humidify the incoming air. It really seems to work and you do feel warmer when you use it. It's designed for people to mouth breath through it but I position the mask so I can nose breath, after a while, my nose does start to get a little runny but it takes a lot longer than it normally does in cold weather. They sell more expensive versions of such masks at Walgreens which are also for mouth breathing. Other masks that have the same idea are Polarwrap, BreathXchange, Talus Cold Avenger and the Icanbreathe cold weather mask. That Icanbreathe mask doesn't have any high tech heat exchange material and is just a fleece mask lined with silk to hold the moisture away from you instead but it sounds like it's very comfortable and they have children sizes but they're hold on by ear loops, I think they should have elastic straps that go around your head so that you can dangle them around your neck when you go indoors. Basically they are scarfs that don't get soggy and frozen. I don't know how the Psolar mask compares to the others, they all cost between $40 and $60 so I really can only afford one right now. I think that if you were going to mouth breath, you should use one of these masks. I was going to try and sew a pocket into a scarf that I could put a pocket heater into and position over my nose or modify a dust mask to hold a pocket heater but this Psolar thing seems to do the job. I figured that with my heart failure, the last thing that I needed was to breath Arctic air into my lungs.I think they call these masks Personal Respiratory Heat Exchangers (PRHE).Regards,Subject: Breathe Through the Mouth is Harmful to HealthTo: BeingSick Date: Wednesday, January 12, 2011, 9:21 PM When your nasal congestion due to colds or other problems you will automatically breathe through the mouth.
