Hi all

For those of you in South Florida...have you noticed the white flies lately? I'm

worried about my plants. I have a baby ylang ylang tree and other scented

beauties in my backyard and I've seen these flies..anyone know anything or have

a natural repellent?

Thanks

Isis

Hi Isis,

I don't post often cos' I'm a perfumery bebe, but I enjoy reading about others'

adventures. I might have something to finally contribute.

I'm not from Florida, but I grew up in Southern California and my mom had a huge

garden. White flies multiply so fast that topical stuff doesn't work well and

who wants to use chemicals. Here's our trick. White flies are attracted to

yellow, so use anything yellow, like yellow plastic cups. Using an old

paintbrush, coat the cups with a product from your garden center called

" Tanglefoot " and use a few cups for a large plant, place them fairly close to

the plant on stakes. When the cup is ooated with white flies, replace with a

new Tanglefooted cup. It's not pretty, but it works! : ) HTH

I noticed them more earlier in the summer, but I haven't seen any lately.  I've

been having problems with aphids on my hibiscus, and I just found two leaf

rollers on my cannas this afternoon(squished em').  They seem to just fly away

whenever I try to spray them with any organic control, but I've noticed that

after a while they seem to go away on their own.

Hi Deb,

And THANKS! Home Depot here I come, I'll look for that product...I also did

some research, and ladybugs work well also. They recommend you plant things

that attract them, and you can always order ladybugs from a

supplier...those bugs are gross multipliers and can destroy a garden, but

they don't bite people.

Thanks again!

>They are doing the 'wave' LOL! The pests down here in Florida are no joke. The

only problems I ever had in any of my outdoor gardens in Illinois was and

occasional munching by Japanese beetles. But other than that-nothing. Down

here, the bugs are out of control! I guess that's part of living in a year

round warm climate.

Ooh you are so right, the price to pay for living in Florida....now if we

could only get rid of all the palmetto's it would truly be paradise...those

things freak me out, they just don't exist on Long Island...my exterminator

comes every month to just to make sure I'm not standing on a chair

screaming!!

Oh my god ! Me too! I cant stand them things-and I see them all the time!

Major disgust and freak out factor.  They are so huge!  And persistent!

They've escaped roach traps even!  Ugh, they disgust me and , well, scare the

crap out of me.  Is there an official name for giant roach phobia?

little turquoise tint.
