Guest guest
A 72 year old gentleman presented today with localized low back pain. OK. That was the easy part.Incidentally, he showed me his abdomen which "pooches" when he does a sit up.Sure enough, there it was, like the parting of the red sea, sort of in reverse. He did have open heart surgery 4 years ago--big scar along the sternum. Wonders out loud if that had anything to do with it...So here is my question.Since diastasis is generally considered a benign condition (unless the individual develops an umbilical hernia...)is it safe/effective for him to do core strengthening exercises. Seems like crunches would be contraindicated?Without an intact rectus, he's likely to have recurrent low back and pelvis issues.Otherwise, he is a pretty fit guy.Thoughts, suggestions? Many thanks, as always,Ann DC
