Dear UK listmates,

This summer I've been working at a 'disabilities' camp in USA where my

22 year old daughter has been participting. About 60-70% of the staff

is from out of country with the majority from UK. The camp serves all

age groups and all 'labels'. The patience, kindness, gentleness,

enthusiasm shown by these young people[19-23yrs] has been amazing.

They've experienced it all - biting, shoving, hitting, spitting[in the

face!] seizures, food fights, OCD, fascinations with everything on

camp, sleepless nights and days chasing the runaways etc. Still they've

managed to get most of the campers on boat rides, in the 'mud pit', up

the climbing wall, on the ropes course, in the lake, in the pool, on

paddle boats, out to the farm to feed animals, over to the garden to

plant and water, to overnights in tents on a small nearby island. You

name it; they've done it- all with such a sense of joy and dedication.

Yes, they've been in tears, like us, wondering if they could tolerate

another moment. But with the wonderful resilience of youth they awake

to a new day, plotting more fun. Many have been motivated by school

mates, family members, neighbors who have the 'labels'. " Half past'

and 'have a wicked day' are familiar phrases in my vocabulary now. It's

been a great experience. You should be quite proud!
