Saturday, September 22nd 2007, 4:00 AM --------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------- Print Email Suggest a Story Q: My 3-month-old Lab puppy had a serious reaction after the multiple vaccine DHPP. His face swelled up, and he was lethargic with a fever. I am concerned my puppy's immune system may have been affected. What do you suggest? A: Any dog or cat with a vaccine reaction should not be overvaccinated because the next time could be more severe and possibly life-threatening. The vet schools and the American Veterinary Medical Association have changed the vaccination protocol recommending optional vaccines like DHPP be given every three years. The healthiest alternative is a simple blood test called an antibody titer. If the titer depicts adequate antibody protection, no boosters are needed. Distemper and parvo, the most common viruses, exist as single vaccines that are more effective with lower risk of a bad reaction. Rabies is the only vaccine required by law every three years.
