Hi Ed,

My son is with my nephew right now and hopefully getting the

mentoring that you mention. Oh my gosh if this kid could only have a mentor in a

career that he can actually do with CMT it would be a miracle. I think he is

afraid that CMT shuts every door he is interested in for a career. He would like

to become an Xray tech but then today I found out that an xray tech as a lot of

lifting to do.

I need to find a way around this lifting to actually give him hope. Maybe he can

be an ultra sound tech.. Aviation would be awesome too.

Hello ,

If he is interested in the medical field, how about an infusion

specialty or phelblotimist. I was a project engineer and had a good

mix of walking and sitting. I think the only thing to be avoided is

an occupation that requires continual standing or sitting and anything with

repetitive hand motions.

Hey ...

An ultrasound tech sounds like a great idea...there isn't a lot of

lifting and it certainly seems to be a growth industry...What about an MRI or CT

tech? Do they have lifting? My recollection from the one CT I've had is that

it doesn't have the positioning associated with the Xray plates...

Good luck...

Cheers

I went to ultrasound school to be a tech. There is lifting to be done to be able

to get the immobilized patients onto the table. Many older people need help to

get onto the table and you are really left with the patient alone, as the

transporters just deliver them to the waiting area. There is also bending to

undo tubes and various equipment (when you are a tech in a hospital) You also

are put into some wierd positions leaning over bodies.

Most techs do not sit down when doing the scanning. Although they will help with

some accomodations, I found it to be difficult. I was a lot stronger then, and

looking back and forward, I do not think I would physically be able to do it all

day long with the way my body is now. There also was a lot of walking back and

forth from exam room to xray room and to look for doctor. Just some food for

thought and of course, everyone's body is different with the way CMT manifests

for them.

I have thought about being a pharmaceutical sales rep because even if you are in

a wheelchair, you can still get around and sometimes I think the doctors would

actually be impressed to see someone overcome their disability. There is also

great money to made in that and great room for growth.
