nancy,

getting the right shoes is key!! i like asics--my last pair was like

running on a cloud:) try to run on the road, grass or a trail if at

all possible...the sidewalk is my last choice because it is one of

the hardest surfaces to run on. it may take a while for your body to

get used to it. start out with a walk/run and gradually build up to

walking less and running more. when i first started i had a few days

of shin splints--this was usually sidewalk related. there were times

one of my knees would feel a little funny stretching, resting, and

crosstraining helps with that. working in lower body strength

training was also a key to my success.

Thanks for the tips Stacey! They are very helpful!

Here's a question: for running, would I need to get a pair of "running" shoes or would good cross-trainers be fine too? I wore my asics cross-trainers for running this fall and wasn't sure if they were worn out or just not right for running (or if my knees were just being testy anyway). I've had these shoes for a year and wear them everywhere so they're for exercise and everything else. For the 5K run/walk we were mostly on sidewalks and I alternated between walking and running (depending on what DD wanted to do, we were doing it with our kids truly for fun). I also went for a 3 mile walk/run alone in my favorite park, that was on asphalt. I fast walked the first 2 miles (15 minute mile pace mostly) and ran (more like jogged) the 3rd and that's when one of my knees started complaining. It was fine whenever I stopped but as soon as I started pounding it would hurt (I jogged 8/10 of the mile and walked 2/10 just to see what was up with my knee).

Thanks!!

nancy,

imo, get a pair of running shoes. watch for signs of wear--that may

show as a breakdown on the shoe or it may show up as a sore part of

your body (most likely a knee!!) because even if the shoe looks good

on the outside it may be worn out on the inside. the new balance and

asics sites have guides for choosing the right running shoe or go to

runnersworld.com and click on shoes and gear--then on the left click

on Running Shoe Basics. i like the runner's world site and magazine

they have lots of info for runners at all levels.

Cool! More geeky exercise stuff to check out (I just set up my F6 and am on the polar personal fitness site seeing all the cool tools and other things I can use with it... I'm driving my hubby nuts... "look I can even download any picture I want for the middle of it, it can be my own logo"... hubby rolls eyes... "And...!")

Thanks Stacey!!!

Stacey is soooo right! People sometimes give me grief because my shoes look

newer when I give them away but I jump up and down in them for kickboxing all

the time and the cushioning loses its umph and I wear out one part of it.

Also so true that if you feel an injury coming on, do check your shoes!
