Guest guest
Hello , took Cody back to the dr. Monday and he said that EMG looked good but it could be that they have caught it too soon. They will redo in 6 months. The dr. wanted to break both his heels and across both the tops of his feet because they are so bad. We are worried and he has an appointment at 9:10 Monday morning at boot and brace. We are trying the braces for 6 months first and then we will reavaluate to see how he is doing. His feet was a 3 1/2 last year and this year he wears a 2 1/2. I am praying that the braces will help because I could not imagine them breaking both his heels and the tops of his feet. My husband told the dr. that he doesn't want him getting arthritis but the dr. said he will have it either way because of the way his feet are growing. We will just keep taking it one step at a time. Thanks for all your help. Buffy
Guest guest
Hello, I have CMT type 2. I just wanted to reply and say I had that very same thing (sort of) done in 85 and 86. I too wore braces for a while before I had surgery on both feet, I had very high arches. I had a tripple arthrodesis and tendon transfer with great success. They broke my foot (well both of them) across the top and refused them then took a tendon from the inside of my foot to the outside of my foot. I won't lie, it was painful, but the rewards for me were worth it. I would do it again. I still have the internal staples, but I don't even know they're there. I am now 36 and AFO free. Guest guest
Buffy, I had surgery about 12 years ago and it worked out wonderfully. However, my foot began to have problems as of late. I went back to the surgeon and he said that although the surgery was a success, that CMT continues to advance. Because of this he said that he recommends that he go back in and " make adjustments " . I have to say that after the surgery the foot had no problems and I didn't need any AFOs, only now am I checking to find out about them. I loved the surgery and highly recommend it. I would deffinatly have the " adjustment " . However, I am no longer on Medicare and a Social Security income which allowed me the 8 weeks of recovery time (it was a major surgery). Some people gotta work fer a livin' heh. If you have the time and income or insurance for the surgery, I personally would do it. However (don't you love those), I will tell you that it is painfull and you are on your back (out of necessiy) for at least 2 weeks of your recovery time. After the recovery time though, and when it has fully healed, no problem.
Guest guest
Hi Buffy, The surgery may really help your son then. My son had to have it done at 14 & 15 to bring his foot to a weight baring position. His bones were very soft. The doctors report said he was able to cut through them without much effort. I never knew CMT deformity could actually create soft bones, but it does.
