All, This style of traction seems to prevent the approximate 15 degree rom that occurs with each respiration (inhale/exhale). It is not something that seems appropriate for any fusion as the body will be attempting to proceed with that rom and unable to do so .... interfering with the fusion? I don't know. Hi All:

Any thoughts on contraindication of the over the door traction unit once the patient has had a fusion of C6,C7. I have found it very helpful for patients with bulging discs (myself included) but have never come across this particular situation before.

My thought is that at 7.5 lbs. (which is the recommended weight) it shouldn't effect the fusion but would love to hear others opinions.

Over-door-traction weight MUST be in EXCESS of the weight of the head (12# ??) Better to use horizontal – for better relaxation and control. May only need 5# for good results Bob W. I would consider all of  comments submitted and then act accordingly.  An older fusion of several years will certainly be more stable than a new one.  I would give it a try if fusion is older.  Schneider DC

If your wanting to help a disc I would recommend an over the door repetitive traction like the ones used by Pettibon or Clear. They are not a static pull and can help hydrate the disc.
