I have had my renin and aldo tested before and the urine values were not done and I was on Eplerenone for one and only off for a week for the other, so I have had to educate the docs on the appropriate way to test.  No mention has been made to me by the doctor of what kind of sodium diet to be on or whether to keep my potassium level up for this test (because I run on the low side and use potassium supplementation).  This is why I am seeking advice so I can ensure to the degree that I can that this is a valid result.  So are you saying that there are different norms for the results based on the urine sodium? Thanks,Cindi From: hyperaldosteronism [mailto:hyperaldosteronism ] On Behalf Of Clarence GrimSent: Saturday, January 01, 2011 2:41 PMTo: hyperaldosteronism Subject: Re: Without the urine Na it is not possible to interpret the renin or Aldo. When I do the renin and aldosterone, the recommended protocol is to also collect a 24 hour urine for K, Na, Creat and Aldo. Could you share what values you are looking for in the results of the 24 hour urine and the importance of these results in the interpretation of the renin and aldo? My doctors just want to do the renin and aldo so I want to be able to explain the importance of doing the 24 hour urine. Thanks in advance,Cindi

yes.and unless you measure the urine Na and K they will not have any idea of what you are eating.CE Grim MDI have had my renin and aldo tested before and the urine values were not done and I was on Eplerenone for one and only off for a week for the other, so I have had to educate the docs on the appropriate way to test. Cindi,

Labs list renin norms based on urine

sodium excretion.  An very low sodium

ingestion will increase renin, but you have little idea of your ingestion until

you have it urine tested.  On about 800

mg/day sodium, my urine sodium was too low to quantitate.  That may not be so with others.

When I saw Dr. Young at Mayo, he

said he'd never seen such a low urine sodium.

He, however, neglected to take that into consideration when evaluating

renin.

What were your previous aldo and

renin numbers, with lab norms?  If you

don't have your lab results, you should get them and maintain your own file.

Without the urine Na it is not possible to interpret the

renin or Aldo. Does he want you tested on a low normal or high salt diet. Ask

about which part of the monthly cycle the lab wants you in. But they prob don't

know. The U K tells if you are losing K be sure they draw your blood correctly
