Just a quick note from me on the reading programs... I bought 100 lessons whatever it is called and I HATED it! My daughter was begging me to teach her to read in preschool and I thought a systematic approach like that offered would be good. I absolutely hated their approach. VERY phonetic to the point of being very different from reading. Very rigid and very slow and repetitive too. A woman I knew in the preschool introduced me to another series, that I can't remember the name of right now but I know I bought it in a Christian bookstore (because that's where my friend got it) but it was not even slightly religious. It was more of a blend of phonetics and whole language and it had cute illustrations that my daughter liked too. She really did well with it and had fun learning too. The ones we started with (beyond the very beginning) focused on short vowel sounds and then long vowel sounds and then she was way beyond what the next books were (consonant blends I think) and we moved on to just reading books together. She's in first grade now and WAY beyond first grade language arts level, she's reading chapter books just slightly below the level my 4th grade sons reads (and he's an advanced reader too and we did not do any home supplementation because he had so many learning issues, he's gone from a year or more below grade level to two grade levels above in the last year though). Anyway, the series had a bunch of workbooks, starting with a level aa I think and then moving up. I looked for her "reading books" as she called them but I must have gotten rid of them. If I find the title of the series somewhere I'll let you know. Some people love that 100 lessons thing but I'm not one. If you can see it before you buy it, read through the introductory material and see if you like their approach before you buy it. Other literacy tips for young readers: read to her as much as you can, pointing out words as you go so she learns to associate the sounds with words. Both my kids, but especially my daughter, loved the "little books" that are like 8 pages long, 2-5 words on a page, very repetitive and often follow a predictable pattern. She worked on those first with me and then wanting to do them herself. They start with those in kindergarten and her teacher had to give her more challenging books because she'd done those the year before.

Stacey - kundalini yoga and ramblings

Hi!I was pretty much eyeing them all. The one that I'mpretty interested in is the AM/PM one as I would likesomething that is not longer than 30 minutes or sojust so I can get into the habit of doing something inthe evenings again. Today I previewed one I got in atrade several months ago - Transformation throughKundalini yoga with April Bernardi (sp?) This onelooks pretty interesting, there is some "traditional"sun salutations in there as well as more of what icall "kundalini" yoga. The DVD has a 40 min practiceand a 20 min practice. I may do that one for my Wedyoga session. I wish I could find my Mantra Girl DVD.I have a bad feeling I traded it since it isn't in mybook or in my pile of "unfiled" DVDs. (I, like Caroly & keep mine in a book- actually 2 books - onefor "regular workouts" one for yoga/Pilates/TaiChi/T-Tapp- I also recycled the cases and keep thecovers in sheet protectors in a separate book - I maystart tossing some of the covers of the ones I know Iwon't sell or trade, just to make more room. I alsokeep a handful of cases in case I do want tosell/trade any of them)I really don't know much about Kundalini at all. I'llhave to try to find out more b/c it does make me feelvery alive and energized as well as positive. All good things, right?I can spend a fortune on Amazon right now on thesethings, but I'm restraining myself. Although I doneed to add something to my cart to get free shipping.I'm going to order a book about teaching your kids toread - I think the title is Teach Your Child to Readin 100 easy Lessons. I'm not sure if 100 lessons willdo it or not, but my DD (almost 4 1/2) is veryinterested in learning how to read. I figure we cantry it and if she isn't ready I can put the book asideand use it when she is - even if it ends up being asupplement to her regular schooling. Provided herpre-school teachers feel she is ready it will beKindergarten next year and I've heard that it hasgotten very academic. The Kindergarten classes areall day here now and supposedly they do teach them howto read - sounds more like 1st grade to me -I guesspreschool has replaced Kindergarten. Since my DD'sbirthday is right near the cut off I wasn't sure if Iwould send her or not - but I'll see what her teachersthis year have to say. She doesn't have an interestin writing - not letters or numbers -I think she has astrong perfectionist streak in her and she knows shecan't do it "right" so she doesn't want to do it allin spite of my telling her that the only way to getgood at something is to practice. I don't push itthough b/c I just figure it will be counterproductiveand when she's ready she'll do it. We do have tons ofactivity books and I know that she has excellentcomprehension and understanding of things - she caneven do those darned analogies that we had on the SATX to Y and A is to B...and all that stuff! She'sreally interested in learning to spell and can sightread a few words - her name, dog, cat, etc.Anyway, sorry to go off on a tangent. But if I hadunlimited income I think I'd buy up all the Ravi/Anadvds right now...... Thanks, ! I will try to look at it at Borders or

B & N before I order it. I actually have to go to

Borders - my Yoga Kickbox Fusion workout will only

play in one of my DVDs players and that one died this

morning - so I want to see if I can get an

exchange/replacement for it. I'll see if they have

the book and look through it. I'll do some more

searching, too. Someone mentioned the 100 lessons

book to me - I guess it all depends on the child!

Do you have just some easy books for her to practice with? Amazon has a ton. My son has about all the sets. He pretty-much taught himself to read, but loves these books. Anyway, he was reading before he turned 5. His teacher had him bring a book into preschool and he had to read to the class. It's really amazing since I have only helped him a bit, but not a single " lesson " .

Darcy

Thanks, ! I will try to look at it at Borders or

B & N before I order it. I actually have to go to

Borders - my Yoga Kickbox Fusion workout will only

play in one of my DVDs players and that one died this

morning - so I want to see if I can get an

exchange/replacement for it. I'll see if they have

the book and look through it. I'll do some more

searching, too. Someone mentioned the 100 lessons

book to me - I guess it all depends on the child!

Definitely depends on the child and also the parent. The 100 lessons didn't work well for me for a lot of reasons but other people like it a lot so that's why I suggested reading through the intro section first (for any of those programs).

Good luck with that and getting a replacement for your dvd!

I'd say my daughter is more self-taught than anything too. Our not even close to consistent lessons helped give her more confidence I think but really just practicing with the little books and other sets were huge, like Darcy says things like that were for her son. I had one set where there was a little book for each letter of the alphabet, she loved that one and others that were grouped by phonics sounds were good for her too. We ordered the sets from the Scholastic book orders she brought home from preschool and she also was reading before she turned 5. Your daughter's desire and interest to read and having fun books she wants to read will probably end up mattering more than any instructional material you can get (based on my own personal experience and Darcy's comments).

Too funny!!!!

She doesn't have an interestin writing - not letters or numbers -I think she has astrong perfectionist streak in her and she knows shecan't do it "right" so she doesn't want to do it allin spite of my telling her that the only way to getgood at something is to practice.
