Guest guest
I coach football at the high school level. We have had great success incorporating the OL movements and hybrids in our program. We use the following basic structure in the off season and summer for football: Monday: Back Squat (3-5 sets of 3-6 reps@70-90%), Full Clean (sometimes we incorporate a jerk w/ the clean)--(4-6 sets of 1-3 reps@50-70%), Overhead Squat 3x5 for shoulder stability and flexability, Glut Ham 4x4, Reverse Hypers 3x8-10, we also bench and close grip incline along with agilities, mats, Heavy Ab work, and Ladder drills. Tuesday: All movements drills----agilities, sled, minimal track work, Ab work, reaction drills, mats, odd object lifting, Hurdle mobility, 4 point, 3 point and 2 point drills. Wednesday: Back Squat (Dynamic fashion 6x3@50-60%), 1 Arm DB Snatches (3x4-8), Bench (Dynamic fashion), Drop Snatch Squat 3x5 for flexability along with agilities, mats, Heavy Ab work, and Ladder drills. Thursday: same as Tuesday Friday: Back Squat (same as Monday), Power Clean (5-6 sets of 1-3 reps@70-90%), Overhead Squat 3x5 for shoulder stability and flexability, Glut Ham 4x4, Reverse Hypers 3x8-10, we also bench and close grip incline along with agilities, mats, Heavy Ab work, and Ladder drills. Sorry for the long post, however, my question is: Are we spinning our wheels by using the OL hybrids in our training? The Westside community seems to condemn its use for football purposes and have heard them say that Dr. Siff does not deem them necessary (Cleans from the floor for back and wrist reasons). [i have never stated that, nor does Westside militate against " OL Hybrids " - I have stated that execution of the full squat style Olympic lifts may be inadvisable or redundant for some athletes. There is a major difference training with derivatives of the OL lifts and the full Olympic lifts. Read my Supertraining textbook, especially Ch 7, to see which exercises I may use for training athletes. All exercise prescription depends on the individual, the sport and the training phase. One cannot make long-term blanket rules for or against any exercise approach. Mel Siff] Our kids love/believe in them (OL) and their value for football purposes. We get our butts kicked at every PL meet, however, we beat the hell out of the same schools in football. Are we wrong for doing them? Obviously we don't care much about PL unless it allows us to reach our full potential as a football player!
