Guest guest
Hi Amy: I was recently at a conference for people with disabilities where Hangar had an exhibitors booth and I was able to try the WalkAide. I had no response to the stimulation and therefore it wouldn't work for me. But I did talk to them about my son trying it since he is still in the early stages of CMT. I also talked to them about cost and insurance coverage. Currently they don't have a code for the equipment, therefore insurance is not covering it. But, the technician said that they will usually work a deal with you to pay it out or he offered a plan where my son could use it and if he would attend a certain number of exhibits with them and do things like visit dr. offices with them, they would let him use it for free. So far, my son has not taken advantage of this opportunity primarily because he is still in a state of denial and won't consider any type of AFO, etc. I did visit with the tech for quite awhile about the WalkAide and he says that some people are actually able to use it for a few days and then go without it for a few days. He said that they think the stimulation is actually stimulating the brain enough to remember to lift the leg for short periods of time. For me, I've been diagnosed for 25 years and am pretty far down the road so to speak, it is too late for something like this. But if it had been available when I first started exhibiting symptoms, I would definitely have given it a try. Just my thoughts.
