I attach important papers published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) today:

1. From Wand et al, Australian and UK physiotherapy/medical researchers saying neck manipulation should be abandoned

2. From Drs Cassidy, Gert Bronfort and Jan Hartvigsen explaining why that is wrong.

3. The text of a BMJ news release sent out at the end of the day yesterday.

This may well give rise to media controversy in your country/jurisdiction.

Cassidy et al. present an excellent case, for which they deserve congratulations and grateful thanks from all of us. Key points include:

· No treatment for neck pain has been proven markedly superior

· Manipulation is as safe and effective as any, having regard to high quality evidence

· It is widely practiced and popular with patients, whose preferences and freedom of choice should be respected

· A recent high quality trial reported that neck manipulation was more effective for patients with acute and sub-acute neck pain than NSAIDs or paracetamol. (That trial was by Bronfort, et al. from Northwestern Health Sciences University – it is referenced in the second attachment.) "The authors did not advocate abandoning these drugs, even though their harms are well documented."
