Guest guest
Cool! I love those abbreviations! I am going to use them when I start my challenge next Monday. I just posted my “before” and “now” pictures – well, the “now” pictures were taken 1 year ago, but I haven’t lost any more weight since then, so haven’t re-taken pictures. It’s under “Jolene’s Journey” on the Group Site. You have to look at them in “slide show fashion” because I haven’t figured out how to get them all on one page yet like some other people have done. I started Jan. 1, 2006 at 237 pounds and got down to 167 by Oct. 1, 2007. I actually got as low as 159 in 2008, but have regained it back. I’m now fluctuating between 167 and 177. I am an emotional eater (binge eater), so it is tough. I am starting BFL for something different to do – plus I’d like to eat cleaner and eat more protein, so this makes sense to me. I’ve lost my weight up to this point (60-70 pounds, depending on the day, ha)....by counting calories and exercising. Eat less, move more. That’s what I tell people. I stick to 1500-1800 calories per day and eat pretty much what I want within reason. Since I’ve changed my life I have become a fitness instructor. I joined a gym and started working out and thought, “I’d like to teach classes”, so I applied, got hired, then freaked out, and then calmed down, and then figured out how to teach. In the beginning I self-educated myself with TONS of magazines, DVD’s, books, etc. and then I started studying and got the following ‘official’ certifications: AFAA Certified Group Fitness Instructor, Certified Spinning Instructor, Certified Tai Chi Instructor, Certified Pilates and Pilates Small Apparatus Instructor, Certified Silver Sneakers and Yoga Stretch Instructor.....and I also teach Step, Water, High and Low Impact Cardio, and Weight Lifting....and I’ve even helped clients (from home) as a Personal Trainer. (I’m not Personal Trainer certified.....yet.....that’s probably going to be my next certification). So that’s my story. This is my 3rd year of lifestyle change. I would like to weigh 137, so I have roughly 30-40 more pounds to go to get to goal weight. I’d probably be happy and look good at 147, so we’ll see. For my height, 5’6”, I am supposed to weigh under 154 to be considered “normal” weight. But I’m pretty muscle-y from all my working out, so that makes me look smaller at a higher number. I love to run and am going to train for a ½ marathon in May. The longest race I’ve run so far is a 5-mile race. I need help with the eating and the emotional eating. I will post regularly with my weights and maybe even update pictures when I hit 157. I used to take pictures every month and now I take them every 10 pounds. So I’ll post new ones when I hit 157. For sure by the end of my 12-week challenge I will be there. Maybe even lower. Who knows? So my focuses will be eating better and drinking more water. I’d also like to exercise on my ‘non teaching’ days and only take one day of rest each week. I need to do better at that. Guest guest
Hi Jolene, Welcome! And congratulations on the big lifestyle change. If you're an emotional eater or prone to bingeing, the BFL free day can reinforce bad habits by setting you up to overeat one day a week. It's not easy, but it is possible to wreck your entire calorie deficit for the week with one out of control free day. As you get into the nutrition, my advice would be to maybe have two free meals per week instead of a whole day, or to plan your free day ahead of time so you get to enjoy exactly what you want but you don't go bonkers. It can be a great relief for most people to take a day off from worrying about the diet, but for those of us with food issues, it can be a bad set-up. Also, if you're doing BFL on top of your busy teaching schedule, you may find that you need to increase the recommended portions or possibly double your carb portions at the first three meals. See how you feel. It may take some trial and error to find the balance where you're fueling your activity and also dropping fat. I look forward to hearing about your progress! > Cool! Guest guest
Hi I'm 58 years old with congenital Under-Active Thyroid but once that was dealt with and I was on a steady dose of Thyroid Extract (in those days), I took very little medication. I remained free from medication apart from Thyroxine, which I'd been prescribed, against my better judgement, after moving to another area of the UK in 1981, even when I had my daughter Sian and 6 years later parted from husband. She and I moved back to my home town in the late 1990s but from early 2000, I seem to have collected one condition after another - Raised Blood Pressure, Osteo-Arthritis in my hips, Lumbar Compression of L4 and 5, Atrial Fibrillation, Angina, Diastolic Heart Failure and last, but now my Cardiologist tells me, he thinks my swollen legs, ankles and feet, are caused by Lymphoedema, as no amount of diuretic medication, moves the fluid or whatever. The poor man asked me how long have my feet and ankles had been swollen last week, to which my daughter (my carer) chimed in honestly that my ankles were swollen in my wedding album, 30 years ago and was surprised that no one (medical or otherwise) had mentioned Lymphoedema and made a tentative diagnosis. Since reading up on the internet about it, all the pointers have been there, for any doctor to see but for the last 30 years, I've struggled with diuretics, needing to be plumbed in like the proverbial washing machine. Sian, now 24, has her own problems and I'm not going to go further with that, but I don't know what I'd do without her. When we moved here, to our first floor flat, I could walk into town, inside 10 minutes and did so, often. That's it. That's my story.
