Guest guest
I had been on Neurontin for 2 years. It had some drawbacks, but for the most part, I thought it was great in dealing with my neuropathic pain and making me feel " normal " for at least a few hours at a time. I was taking 2400 mg/day. When I found out that I was pregnant, my neuro advised me to quit the drug cold turkey. I did this and immediately began experiencing SEVERE withdrawal. I went 72 hours without sleep, began to have anxiety attacks which led to full-blown panic attacks, vomitted for a good 24 hours, and fell into a depression. I was hospitalized for 6 days where they had to help me through the withdrawal process. I thought that I was losing my mind. Apparently, the GABA that I was getting in my brain to keep the neurons from firing was giving me a sense of " calm " as well. When the drug is abruptly stopped and the GABA drops, it really messes with your brain/neurotransmitters. I just wanted to share this experience with you. It might not have happened had my neuro weaned me off of the Neurontin gradually...not sure. Regardless, it was the worst experience of my life and another confirmation of how dangerous these drugs can be. Amy
Guest guest
Hi Amy, I'm so sorry you had to go through this. The printouts I received from my pharmacist cautioned stopping Neurontin all at once, and thus I backed down gradually, just like I started. Seems strange that your neurologist told you to quit cold turkey. Not exactly what I'd call following the 'hypocratic oath' - do no harm. With medications I have always found pharmacists far more knowledgeable than doctors, especially with side effect issues, or wierd things like not drinking grapefruit juice while taking Elavil. I hope you're feeling better now and the pregnancy is going well. ~ Gretchen
