Oil perfume

Hi everyone!

I have created a neroli-based perfume for a client and it is gorgeous in

alcohol. However, she is a doctor of chinese medicine and will actually be

using it in a therapeutic setting and wants it in an oil base. I feel pretty

comfortable re-formulating to ramp up the amount of botanicals but would

appreciate any wise words from those who work in oil.

Also, she is looking for a pretty bottle with a dauber. Actually, probably a

quantity of pretty bottles with a dauber to sell the perfume to her patients.

Any help? I will spend tonight looking through some of the recommended bottle

sites but it always helps to have first-hand experience.

Thanks -

Elise

I personally have become entranced with Egyptian perfume

bottles....pyrex, great shapes, etc., FromCairoWithLove is my source

right now, but I'm not sure if this meets the requirements for your

customer. Keep in mind these are made for oil based perfumes at least

in part due to the whole Muslim non-alcohol thing (they sell some

perfume oils on their site but they look synthetic...but that doesn't

keep you from doing as you will with them of course!). There are

occasional dabs of the gold paint on the stoppers that are baked into

them (the stoppers/daubers) at high heat and don't come off when rubbed

hard with a fingernail if done correctly (out of almost 80 bottles no

stoppers have not been baked correctly, and maybe 5% of the bottles have

had a bit of paint not heated enough which I set aside for my own

display purposes only) but for all I know that might be a no no from a

medicine stand point. For the price there is nothing more ornate from

what I have found, and they take a lot of pride in their work.

Hi Elise,

I have switched to FCO this year for all my new blends and Everything

seemed to transfer beautifully. I like working with oil , and after I

found the incense resin notes I wanted blended with the oil I was very

pleased. My new line is " Body Incense Oils " and I have to say that it

really seems to agree with the way I like to work.

I guess it depends on what kind of oil base she requires for her

work and what essentials you want to use. I will try to look up my

source for dauber bottles they are nice but not too fancy, clear glass.

> Hi Katlyn and everyone who responded,

I haven't yet tried the blend in oil but will try to get to it tomorrow. I also

have a new perfume of my own that seems to be asking for an oil base. For the

client, we have a number of EO/aromatherapy blends that she would like in

grapeseed oil but I think I can do the neroli blend in FCO. This client has a

great nose and is fun to work with.

Body incense oils sound great, I love the rest of your stuff!

Hello, I need a little advice please. I have always made perfume with

alcohol, but have been trying

an oil based perfume and also solid perfume. I find that the oil seems to

'eat' up the fragrance and

then I can't smell anything at all. With the solid perfume, I cool the oils

down as far as I can before

adding the essential oils etc but the same thing happens. I feel like giving

up and going back to alcohol !

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong please ? I would appreciate any

help, thanks a bunch.

Big hugs, joey

Hi Elise, Hi Katlyn

I know most folk suggest increasing the top notes when working in oils and

balms... I don't have access to an alcohol I'm happy with, so jojoba and beeswax

balms are all that I know.

I've gravitated towards making very intense bases with staying-power, and

include them in larger proportion than might seem sensible at first... and

follow this by almost ladelling in the top notes around the heart.

My sense is this strong 'solid' base is like a bellows which pushes or 'blows'

the higher proportion of top notes out... it makes them sing without flying away

- as you'd usually expect in this medium - but they do hold their own, and have

good sillage in the opening.

I am an acupuncturist / TCM practitioner ... I feel this kind of base gives the

top notes enough qi to escape their 'heavy' oily carrier. Counterintuitive, and

a bit odd perhaps.. but the experiments seem to to be coming along ok.

Katlyn.. I'm wondering if your process with your incense body oils has produced

a similar effect...?

You both sound as if you're making beautiful things :)

Hi Katlyn,

I have such a passion for working in oil perfumery and have developed quite a

knack for creating long lasting perfumes that are not only beautiful but

affordable too. I am hoping to complete an Osmanthus perfume shortly that has

been in process for the last year!

Since I only sell oil based perfumes, I was especially happy to see your update!

Off to check out your site. :)

All the best,

Hi Folks,

Margi, I feel the same about the base notes, your concept is very

interesting .

Base notes are why the Body Incense concept, I love the woods and

resins, makes sense with what I do for a living.

It was challenging to find the right Labdanum, one of my favorite base

notes that would blend with FCO oil. I gave up on jojoba . But Eden

has that great clear Labdanum that works like magic.

Will I hope you keep that in-stock for ever!

, It has seems that I have had the opposite experience with oil

vs alcohol. I kept uping the % of EO in the alcohol and found that

after year on the dark shelf it was loosing potency and I felt like I

never perfected the art of vanquishing the alcohol element completely,

where the FCO blends had retained the original scent or improved it.

We all have different blending styles and mine just seems to work with

the incense notes and oil. The new line is sold in small vials and

very concentrated. More as a scent experience , like incense, meant to

inspire in the moment and not a classic perfume balance/style.

We will see if folks respond to it...

Blessings, ,

Katlyn

Hello Katlyn and thank you. I figure it's prolly because I have always

worked with a mixture of essential oils and aroma chems. That's prolly why

the alcohol works so well for me. I'm not a purest ! hehehehee I'll give

anything a try. LOL. So if I use only essential oils then it might work ?

This maybe a dumb question but when you say FCO. is that fractionated

coconut oil ? I was using jojoba. I just had a look at your website. it's

beautiful ! When I grow up I want a website too. Tehehehee. Hugs, joey

Hi Katlyn and thank you. I shall try the fractionated coconut oil and see

what happens. I went to the market today and it was so hot that all my

lovely lotion bars became little puddles ! hahahahahahaa
