As a beginner, the main thing is to lay that foundation of eating

right with consistant exercise. Dont think about adding in any form

of supplementation until you think you have nailed that down.

Supplements are in their own defintion 'in addition to' and so they

are to add something you may be missing, but like how do you know

until you actually get the nutrition part underway?

That said, as a basic that EVERYONE should be taking (new or not) is

a complete multi-vitamin complex that contains all your b-vitamins,c,

and minerals. Many available, compare ingredients. After you think

you have the basic BFL portions and nutrition down (usually a few

weeks into it) another first basic to consider adding is a dietary

oil - EFA's or essential fatty acids. Many take just a flaxseed oil

supplement(like Barleans) but many like a combo blend called UDO's

Blended Oils. When you are trying to lose bodyfat and lowering your

calories, you limit the bad fats, but your body needs 'good' fats for

energy that they can readily use - thereby helping to release the

stored bodyfat when it doesnt think you are setting it up for the

next perceived famine.

By now maybe a few weeks have gone by, you are getting tired of tuna,

chicken or eggs and dammit you need CONVENIENCE plus a change of

pace. This is where the addition of an MRP or protein powder comes in

handy as an extra way to up your daily protein comsumption. Get this,

they are usually not neccessary, but hey convenience rules! :-)

Beyond these three basics (vitamins/EFA's/protein powders)there isnt

much more. Some people like creatine or glutamine(or a blend like

EAS's BetaGen) for muscle soreness, but again NOT a necessity - more

like individual choice. Do some reading up or 'homework' as I call it

before you ever buy anything, not just on someones overzealous

recommndation. And what about socalled 'fatburners'? Honestly have a

cup of coffee, a RedBull, green tea, or even a sugarfree Mtn Dew and

thats about all the caffeine 'boost' most people ever need. Way

cheaper on the pocketbook.

Keep it simple - the fat comes off with dedication, perseverance,

consistancy and most importantly *time*. :-)

Thanks Joni! I appreciate the advice! You are right -- I definitly need to get

the nutrition down first. I've done very well this week, but man, am I SICK of

eggs! I detest egg whites by themselves, so I have to throw that yolk in! I'm

going to buy some turkey sausage this week to add another choice.

I drink protein shakes also, but I'm beginning to think I may be drinking too

many - sometimes two a day. I'm thinking I need to stick with the " basics " .

I used to work at GNC and I sampled my way through the whole store on my

employee discount. There are really very few supplements that make a

substantial difference in your results. Some of my observations...

Creatine - totally works to build muscle and aid recovery

CLA - works great in rats, doesn't do a whole lot for humans

Flax oil or ground flax seeds - reduces hunger and cravings, improves fat

loss, improves heart health

Fish oil - reduces hunger and cravings, improves fat loss, improves heart

health

Ephedra - landed me in the cardiology unit, not recommended

Other, more " gentle " fat burning formulas (synephrine, yohimbe, white willow

bark, etc.) - made me paranoid as hell, I was pacing around peeking out the

windows, major insomnia and anxiety, didn't improve fat loss, not

recommended

Glutamine - aides muscle recovery, improves immune function, kinda nice

post-workout

Right now, all I take is a multivitamin, a calcium chew, and fish oil caps.

You can take most supplements with food and/or right before bed. That way if

you get a sour stomach or burp fish oil, you won't know it because you'll be

asleep.

If you're taking Betagen you don't need Phosphagen (and vice versa).

They're both creatine supplements. I'd stick with the Betagen. Plain

Phosphagen is just creatine without any added goodies. Super Duper

Phosphagen, or whatever it's called now, has a lot more calories than

most people need or want when trying to get lean. Betagen is probably

the best choice for recovery and muscle building if you also want

weight/fat loss.

Hi,

I take creatine, but only about 1/2 a teaspoon a day (IF I remember to take it

on days I lift). I don't experience any side effects. THe container instructs me

to take it BEFORE exercise (well sometimes I do, sometimes I forget so I take it

after).

I am training in the mornings and after I drink betagen and take CLA.

Does anyone take phosphagen before a workout. I was wondering if I should add

it to my plan

My very first BFL, I took the " fat burner " Thermo DynamX .  It was a BFL

thing.  It made me jittery and perhaps provided a placebo effect making me

" feel " like it was making things go faster, I learned from subsequent BFLs that

I didn't need to take anything.  It also gave me HORRIBLE heartburn/reflux, so

much so that I ended up with an ulcer on my vocal cord that was taken care of

surgically, which ironically, ruined that BFL challenge and stopped me at 10

weeks.

Younger years, I took Hydroxycut...also made me jittery - maybe some people

would call it " energy " lol....I felt like no matter how early I stopped taking

it, I was still jittery at night but still tired at the same time, only now I

couldn't sleep.  I also was irritable, high strung, sick to my stomach.  Back

in the day Marla Duncan was the magazine model pictured with all the Hydroxycut

ads.  I started to refer to Marla Duncan as my " assassin "   as I was

convinced she was trying to kill me with those pills.  I didn't lose any weight

with them  either.

On the other hand, I have a friend who was a diet pill popper and she seemed

like she could handle them.  I noticed she was shaky but she didn't seem

irritable or like they bothered her if she did have any side effects.  I guess

it depends on the person.  I'm not a fan though.  :o)
