Tim: Try to get the reason or rationale for not allowing DCs. It may just be

some goofy mistake, in that case it can easily be corrected. Or, it may be some

actual bias toward DCs...in that case, you should get their reasoning in writing

or an email. In other words, not just something that says DCs are not permitted

but something that says WHY DCs are not permitted. It is possible (though not

likely) that it is a benevolent bias (ie they are concerned that the attendees

will be intimidated by the DC expertise? I mean it is possible that it is a

misunderstanding)...but i would try to get the reason in writing.

While you are at it, ask if NDs can take the class.

psychologists.... Not DCs. I think it's unethical to restrict a fully licensed

(by the state of Oregon) profession with a particular skill set well within our

scope and knowledge in every state we practice, from taking a particular course.

I wonder how providence feels about it?

Dr. Irving,

the hospital may not be happy with this group's slant.

You might call the providence risk management department and ask them 'innocently' of course, if it's their policy to exclude DCs from cont ed events at their hospital? Or are the aware that it's being done? something like that. Ask if their policy also extends to prefering 'no referrals' from the chiropractic profession? Are there any other exclusions to the profession they would like to make you aware of so you don't bother the facility with future interactions? "You would be happy to get the word out to all area chiropractors so the hospital's exclusionary rules are understood and followed."

I followed that tactic once with Mt Hood Medical Center when a rheumatology department denied me the right to refer to a patient. They said they didn't take referrals from DCs and suggested I send the pateint thru their PCP first. The hospital's risk management wasn't too keen on that idea especially when I said,

" I've been told by a current practitioner that they do not accept referrals from DCs. May I send this notice to all area DCs so that they will not waste time referring for orthopedics, neurology, dermatology, neurosurgery, primary care or any other departments in your hospital? Could you please give me your written policy on referral restrictions for my profession?" I mentioned I could easily post it on an Oregon DC listserv that would get the word out to hundreds of doctors. That way we wouldn't bother them with future referrals.

Chiropractic discrimination in continuing education class heard at Providence.

Colleagues,

I recently signed up for a class held at Providence. A soft tissue technique that I have always wanted to learn more about. Im not going to post which one as I do believe this particular group can choose which professionals they want to teach to and which ones they do not.

I would, however, like to contact Providence just to let them know there is a class held in their facilities that discriminates against DCs. Any idea who I may contact?

I was told that the class is on to MDs, DOs, PTs and OTs. Another class held that weekend that I was also interested in is also open to clinical psychologists.... Not DCs. I tried to refer an ataxic patient to OHSU...probably 1 - 1 1/2 years ago, and was told by the neurology dept THEY didn't accept referrals from chiropractors... I also tried to get them to go to a Functional Neurologist...but, I think they got tired of TRYING to get help... (:-)

All,

THis is disheartening. I wonder if all on this list would assist in posting which hospitals refuse DC referrals?

1. List the Hospital or institution/medical center.

2. List the reason given for the refusal and get a NAME.

3. Try to get it in writing.

4. post it on our listserv. Or if you feel uncomfortable with that, please email to me directly.

thanks,
