Hi all,

My tonka tincture has developed white sediment at the bottom of the jar.  When I

filtered it, I used coffee filters and it was clear.  Should I filter again

using the #3 filters and see if sediment develops again?  Do you think that

perhaps I have beasties growing?  Or is this normal?  The tincture is a couple

of months old.

Thank you!

Jane

Hi Jane,

I went back and checked on my Tonka Bean Tincture.  I did three recharges in

everclear and filtered through an unbleached coffee filter about a year ago.

Mine has no residue or sediment.

I would say it is definitely worth refiltering and giving it another month or

two and see if it reoccurrs.  A couple questions or things to consider-

When I originally filtered mine, I had some semi-solid oils caught in the

filter.  It was oily, probably a bit of fixed oil from the beans.  Could it be

something like that at the bottom?

Have you noticed any change in the scent of the tincture?

Did you chill the tincture before straining?  I know with many of the

animalistic tinctures, I have read to chill them before filtering to help

prevent sediment and such from the final product.  Tonka isn't an animalistic

tincture, but maybe it has some components that will fall out of solution when

chilled or something?

Hope that maybe helps some.  I am no expert in this yet, so that is just based

off my own experiments.

Thanks ,

I did not chill the tincture before straining but it was chilled after

straining.  The particulate was suspended in the solution so I shook it and let

it come to room temp and the particulate settled at the bottom.  The tincture

does have an off note upon application to the skin but disappears in a few

seconds.  I think I will use my #3 filters and see if this occurs again.

Thanks again!

Jane
