Hi Max - eliminating processed carbs does not mean high salt :) When you mention

the paleo way of eating, I think you're on the right track because that means

veggies, fruit, nuts, eggs, and protein, and as long as you purchase

no-salt-added versions of these products you should do okay with regard to

sodium. I use FitDay.com to track mine, and rarely go over 1500mg per day. But

then, I don't eat bacon :)

" Low carb " has a bad reputation thanks to the myth that it's all about eating

bacon slathered in mayonnaise or whatever. If you keep up on the paleo

literature, you'll find that it's not carbs that are the problem, but processed

foods in general. After all, fruits and veggies are mostly carbs, and they

aren't the problem, it's the excess of refined grains and sugar in the Western

diet that causes trouble for many of us.

But hey, what do I know, I'm just a woman who lost fifty pounds eating this way

and has kept it off for 10 years :)

> I just started low carbing again about 3 weeks ago. That way of eating has me

ingesting massive amount of salt. Lot of eggs & bacon, pickles, soups, etc that

i make that are full of salt. I am probably just making the situation worse. My

blood sugar is benefiting, but certainly not my PA problems.

Not at same time. Several with "leaks and PTH CA problems which now seem most likely due to PA as in the article which I uploaded last night.Sounds like a good report if we could collect the data. Another good reason we need a good database!!!!CE Grim MDOn one of the earlier posts someone mentioned the high co-occurrence of parathyroid disease with PA. Is there any science on this or just an anecdotal observation. Have any of the groups member had parathyroid removal in addition to adrenal surgery and is this ever done at the same time ? LSS From: hyperaldosteronism [mailto:hyperaldosteronism ] On Behalf Of Clarence GrimSent: Monday, April 11, 2011 9:38 AMTo: hyperaldosteronism Cc: Clarence GrimSubject: Re: Re: PA & Renal Calcium Leak Interesting! So the HCTZ is basically treating my higher salt diet, which i really have paid no attention to, and in turn is increasing my potassium and magnesium loss. most ;ikelyIt is also interesting to note that during the summer of 2006 I did about a 3-4 mo low carb diet where I lost about 27 pounds. I fell off the wagon in Oct 2006. The twitching started about a month or so after I went back to my old eating habits. I often wondered if the lowcarb diet caused it, or just brought out the electrolyte imbalance. I just started low carbing again about 3 weeks ago. That way of eating has me ingesting massive amount of salt. Lot of eggs & bacon, pickles, soups, etc that i make that are full of salt. I am probably just making the situation worse. My blood sugar is benefiting, but certainly not my PA problems. It takes so much work to get into a low carb routine. I also really latched on to the philosophy of trying to eat like our evolutionary ancestors. DASH works into that except for dairy, grain or beans.but remember we have good research data that DASH is healthy. We dont have that on a caveman diet. Humans couldnt have eaten that prior to the last 10,000 years or so. It makes sense to me to try and adopt an eating plan that we basically might have evolved on. But, that said, it would not have had salt in it like I am eating, nor splenda to sweeten things like coffee. I think it goes back to what you said. Do DASH and restrict the caloric intake, it solves most of the problems. Perhaps the Paleo diet in its most restrictive phase would work too? But, I bet our ancestors ate alot of bugs and worms and stuff...not something I plan to do, lol.Why the problem with Vitamin D? I take a ton of that just to stay normal. Granted, i am not a sun worshiper, but even in the summer it doent go higher. Is that tied to PA too? Some data that not all Vit is adsorbed. so change brands or go with a prescription one?Mayo told me that the Renal Leak was probably genetic and that there was nothing I could really do about it but try to "plug" it. I am learning that is not entirely true. It is more like the fact that I am eating a typical American diet that HCTZ is required to undo that high salt intake.Right and our genes are not used to the high salt load.Is there any natural way to treat PA and the high Aldo? Of will my future be DASH and Spirno for life...assuming a tumor is not found to be removed? Not that we know of. So DASH like you life depended on it and see how little spiro you need. almost everyone in US has low Vid D and not likely that PA affects that. It does affect CA metabolism and noted in Dr. Cappucio's review I uploaded and which I have noted before I think. My guess is that many Endos get sidetracked on the PHP issue because that is what they do more of.CE Grim MDOn Apr 11, 2011, at 8:14 AM, Francis Bill SUSPECTED PA wrote:Many on here have low Vitamin D. Sorry for my slow reply. I was out of town the last 1.5 days. My sisters house

was destroyed by the tornado that went through WI. I had some time to think

about this stuff while driving out to help her. I think I am going to try and

blend my lowcarb and DASH and come up with something that falls in between and

focuses on lower salt intake. I dont have to eat all that salt just to be low

carb, so you are right. I am going to design my own High Potassium, Magnesium,

Calcium - low salt diet. If that resolves to DASH - great. The end result is

what moatters, not what we call it.

Fitday does track potassium, you just have to click the " Nutrition " tab to see

it. Even the free online web version is very good, in fact that is all I use

now. I dont think they have an iPhone app.

Share your finding please. I do best on low carb diet. Best to your sister. How horrible for her!

If you really want a good database, Yahoo Groups probably isnt the place to host

the forum. There are actual forum software packages, but they are not all free.

A database designed around each Patient with the ability to update fields would

probably be more useful for collecting data. Perhaps, tracking individual blood

tests along with exact meds over time would be a good way to study treatment

results indiviually and collectively? Some, maybe all of us on here might be

willing to contribute financially to get something better going.

Also, I made a mistake in my meds. I take 40MEQ of Potassium Chloride per day

(20meq, 2x a day)

Our problem isn't finding a data base program. What we need is someone with the

time and knowledge to make up the data base.

My preference is file maker pro and have started on it. It is very powerful an easy to program. Everyone that is interested can down load a 30 day free trial. I can set it up for all to access who are on our site. So they can look at only their record. Tiped sad Send form miiPhone ;-)May your pressure be low!CE Grim MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertension

If you really want a good database, Yahoo Groups probably isnt the place to host the forum. There are actual forum software packages, but they are not all free. A database designed around each Patient with the ability to update fields would probably be more useful for collecting data. Perhaps, tracking individual blood tests along with exact meds over time would be a good way to study treatment results indiviually and collectively? Some, maybe all of us on here might be willing to contribute financially to get something better going.

Also, I made a mistake in my meds. I take 40MEQ of Potassium Chloride per day (20meq, 2x a day)

I like the idea of donations to help support the database. Need to think about how we would do this. Tiped sad Send form miiPhone ;-)May your pressure be low!CE Grim MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertension

Our problem isn't finding a data base program. What we need is someone with the time and knowledge to make up the data base.

Creating a format for members to fill is inflexible method as well as not

practical because the form becomes so huge that no one likes to read

through.

A practical solution is for the members, as they receive a single test

result, to add it to a file through a simple drop-down menu system with:

Select test: Result: [Low-High] Units: Notes:

Na 120 110-135 mmol/L dates,

etc...as text input

Cl 130 ...-... ....

K 4.6 3.0-5.0 mmol/L ...

CO2 12 .... ...

.... ... ... ...

.... ... ... ...

Then behind the scenes either Dr. Grim or his assistant can add those values

to a large database, or create software to add those inputs automatically to

the database.

Max.

I need someone to begin to formulate the questions we need from the patients

point of view.

So some one needs to volunteer to be the collector of questions you wished

your Dr would have asked.

Maybe start a file in our files. And update it in one continuos document.
