I'm not sure what to refer to this stuff as, other than it's description...Though distilled, is destructively distilled aka pyrolysis or a cracking process...? So....it's not an EO....I dunno if solvents were used in it's prep...I suspect not, so as an essence, it's not really an absolute type thing....I'm pretty sure it hasn't been CO2 solvented, or flourocarboned.... Is maybe the start of a new type of essence...Fossilized essence...? Hyraceum would fit this also, in that it's fossilized, but is easier to deal with.... You've had some time to do techie stuff...Though I suspect you are up to your ears in alligators, doing Eden.....Got any idea/feelings on this stuff...? Alcohol and Oil...? At roughly 10,000 yrs old....I would call that prehistoric, too.... Not as old as amber, by any means, but still... I don't have any of that, yet, but it's next on my wish list... BTW....was over at Profumo's site....Talk about neat, exotic, stuff.... http://www.profumo.it/perfume/home_english.htm Shows a Hyraceum tincturing kit....Complete with alcohol, to make about 300 ml....about $125 US...+ S & H I guess... Carol...you are sorta right....Amber is *not* fossilized tree sap, however...It's fossilized tree *resin*...A typical age of amber is 150 million years old... It's not fossilized in the rock way, so much, as what's referred to as molecular polymerization....That's why it reminds one kind of like plastic.. Depending upon the type, dry distillation results in the release of the residing volatiles...These are what gives amber it's smell when burned... Eden Botanicals has made available dry distilled Himalayan amber, age is estimated as 35 million years (if I remember correctly)...That means that the aromatic volatiles came into existence...35 million years ago... This particular amber, if I've my ages right, would have happened geologically speaking post the dinosaur extinction... A Baltic type amber would have happened about the same time as dinosaurs walked the Earth... I'm not sure how much scent an alcohol tincture of amber would have.... And you are correct...the chips of Baltic are inexpensive... I do know that Eden's dry distilled amber has many odor products in it...It is not from the typical Baltic amber...
