My guess was it was the low K. Tiped sad Send form miiPhone ;-)May your pressure be low!CE Grim MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertension

Dr G, the literature is a bit muddied on this, but with PA and it's accompanying issues, is a weakened immune system a common occurrence with it. I know for me, I was never ill, or rarely ever, but about coinciding with my BP spike (the permanent spike until spiro came along) I started to catch everything. I took a lot of ribbing from colleagues and friends due to such and of course I did not like having flu 2 x a year etc...

On the brighter note. Since spiro and my self potassium monitoring (the medical K+ gives me such a headache, but I take the potassium gluconate and it, and DASH and spiro, have lately kept it normal) I feel great, I have more energy than ever, and so on. Spiro doesn't seem to help in the bedroom much, but take some with the other I guess. But most of all I am not catching everything lately. And if I do it's a day or two. We used to joke that everyone got a cold for a day and I got it for 2 weeks...and I really did.

I don't know about everyone else but I've had the same issues with catching everything that goes around. I was never sick growing up. It wasn't until the blood pressure and low K got worse (about 10 years ago) that I started getting sick a lot.

Before my adrenalectomy, I had swollen lymph nodes about 80% of the time and I had been through some pretty wicked illnesses. Things like viral menningitis and a bout with an upper respiratory infection that caused such severe coughing fits that I actually disjointed and broke ribs. The swollen glands in my neck and under my arms went down almost immediately after the surgery and here it is almost 4 weeks later and no sign of them swelling again. I've got my fingers crossed on that one.

Daily meds were: Effervescent K 100 meq, 75mg Spiro, Spiro/HCTZ 25/25, Synthroid 50 mcg and prevacid.

Current meds as of 1/9/11 are: Effervescent K 50 meq, 50 Spiro (I cut myself down about 4 days ago from 75), Spiro/HCTZ 25/25, Synthroid 50 mcg and Prevacid.

I have a face to face with my nephrologist finally (the first since 12/15/10 surgery). I have had no guidance from my doctors on my medicine dosages and expectations of when I may get to DC meds completely. That has probably been the most frustrating of all.

Dr. Grim, should I expect any strange side effects when I go off the spiro?
