Nicotiana - need extraction advice

So I have this absolutely amazing nicotiana that has been blooming under my

window and barging into my dreams for months now. It smells like lillies and

marshmallows. The variety is " Only the Lonely. " Fragrance comes on at dusk and

I have a whole colony of moths in my garage that fly out every evening just for

her.

So the last full moon I couldn't resist, and I harvested some of the flowers,

all sticky and clingy on my hands. Some got tossed into my honey suckle

tincture where they browned and proceeded to throw off the fragrance and color.

The rest went into fractionated coconut oil soaked guaze and were gently

layered and sealed in a glass contained to sit out in the moonlight. By morning

only the weird sour lactonic notes remained, none of the lush, sweet body of the

smell.

So what do you think gang?

Question #1: what is the deal with the nicotine content in old fashioned

nicotiana varieties? I know that nicotine is a skin iritant and common allergen

and that the tobacco absolutes have the nicotine removed. My sense was that the

alcohol extract has skin-irritating properties. Is it worth it to try to

extract this one or am I just going to be creating an allergy formula with it?

Question #2 : Has anyone tried hot fat maceration with this one? The flowers

seem too delicate for enfleurage.

Hi folks. I found the original message (41629 from Jess was about extracting

from fresh nicotiana and got no replies that I could find) when searching for

Tobacco for my question.

I know that tobacco is poisonous - I make tea of pipe tobacco and kill bugs with

it in the garden, so I figured it's nothing I want to mess with, without

supervision anyway, heh.

But I keep hearing about its use as a perfume ingredient. I wanted to find out

what it smells like, so I considered tincturing some from the garden (NOT from

commercial smokeable/chewable stuff, etc.), but was scared off by the poisonous

thing and now the " skin irritant " thing mentioned in Jess's post.

Has anyone tinctured it? I looked up tobacco fragrance absolutes and found both

tobacco leaf absolutes and tobacco flower absolutes. Do the solvents do away

with the toxins or something? Would you recommend the beginner just tincture the

flowers?

Any info would be appreciated by this rank beginner!

in AZ, heading back to Lurkdom now.

Hi ,

The Tobacco absolute that I have smells like what you would smell if you opened

a pack of cigarettes.  I not sure if I have some at home full strength but I

know I have some diluted.  Mail me off list & I will send you a small vial for

you to try.

Hi ,

Some Nicotianas have a lovely, even intoxicating scent when in bloom.

Others are milder but still sweet. The scent of those I am most familiar

with is most noticeable at night. They do not smell like cigarettes.

I have never extracted nicotiana, nor enfleuraged it, nor have I purchased

a nicotiana absolute, so cannot help you there.

Hi Evie,

There are many different nicotianas; some really are very sweet,

others less so and evidently some not at all.

Hi Guido, Jane, Folks...

Both Liberty Natural Products and Essential Oil University carry the

Nicotiana absolute...

Because of the pricing, I suspect these are of the leaf...

The Good Scents Co. has several types, flower and leaf, one is stated as

*nicotine free*...If you haven't checked this place out...Lots of info

at their site, too....Bear in mind, they are into synthetics, also....

http://www.thegoodscentscompany.com/

Liberty states theirs is nicotine free...Not sure about EOU....

I would suspect the presence of nicotine or not is tied to any toxicity

issues rather intimately...

I have some of the Liberty absolute, Tobacco blonde....Very nice....! I

suspect the others are, too...

hello gary,

thank you for your time.

i'm afraid that this is most likely true. the leaf absolute is commonly

called tobacco absolute, so if someone had the flower absolute i would

think they would call it tobacco flower absolute.

yes, bill does list the flower abs, but he does not sell it. most items

on this site are not for sale by tgsc themselves. i could ask him, he

apparently had a chance to smell some, maybe he know someone.

i've always wondered, if the original tabac blond by caron does contain

the flower absolute. that golden label, it think that is the tobacco

flower. and arctander states 'a few perfume houses may process their own

absolutes from the concrete extract of flowers from nicotiana affinis,

nicotiana petunoides, or various species of nicotiana from the middle-east.'

i have never smelled the original parfum, a bottle of this usually goes

for over 1000 dollar on ebay.

best,

guido.

Thanks everyone for the replies! Some nicotiana smells heavenly when the

blossoms open at night.

Guido, I defer to the perfumers on the list about the tobacco flower absolute.

When I Googled tobacco absolute, I found merely a sheet of what appeared to be a

chemical analysis or material safety-type-of-thing sheet. I didn't find it for

purchase; but I wasn't looking to buy it. I was looking for as much info as I

could find in order to avoid asking questions on the group here the answers to

which can easily be found, such as " Does the absolute come from the leaf or

flower? "

Thanks!
