Hi , I know what you mean! At first it was a relief to have a diagnosis

(and to know that no, I'm not crazy) but now that reality has set in, I'm a bit

scared too.

Your comment about anxiety made me curious - do you think anxiety was your first

symptom? I'm asking because it came up during my consultation with the

interventional radiologist today. The first symptom I had was probably panic

attacks. Anyway, the IR told me that I should get in touch with the psych docs

I've seen over the years and explain my eventual PA diagnosis to them. The

assumption is that when a patient sees a psych, all medical causes have been

ruled out. In my case - and yours too, if you've ever seen a psych - the medical

side was completely ignored for years.

I think it's really, really important for us patients to educate the doctors who

have missed our diagnosis, so I thought this was worth mentioning.

- msmith1928

45, female, 5'3 " , 120 lbs, 1cm left adrenal nodule, aldosterone 42.3, renin 0.5,

potassium <2.9 (when not taking supplements); 25mg spiro caused gynecomastia, no

HTN meds; other meds are 20MEQ K 2x/day, singulair 10mg, norethindrone .35mg,

and cyclobenzaprine 5mg as needed; low sodium, fructose- and grain-free diet

I'm really scared to have Primary Aldosteronism. I just want to feel normal

again. In many ways I was hoping that all of my health episodes could be

explained by anxiety.

Yeah, I was reading the stories and connecting the dot. That is why I asked. Appears to be a connection.

It seems Inspra contains lactose. Anyone have issues with it that are lactose intolerant?

Anxiety was a part of my life it seemed until I started taking magnesium along with the K. Many sources said we lose one we lose the other (of course mag is not routinely tested) and that mag "seems" to help with anxiety. Didn't hurt to try and whether in my head or not (there's a lot of room there) it has visibly helped. BUT.......so has DASH and spiro...so is it that or THAT? I know anxiety is way down Subject: PA and AnxietyTo: "PA Yahoo Group" <hyperaldosteronism >Date: Thursday, April 21, 2011, 1:47 PM

Mine has dropped like a rock too, except a painful reminder of it while waiting on CT scan results. It has reminded me how much of a daily anxiety spin cycle i was on 4 years ago and how I never want to be like that again. It is much easier to recognize how bad it was when you get past it. OMG! lol.

My very first PA attack was treated as a panic attack, and for the next 7 years

that's what I was diagnosed with, and treated with meds that made the condition

worse rather than better.

This seems to be very common, especially among us younger folks - when a young

person presents at the ER with elevated BP and no other known diseases, I'm

convinced that since the advent of SSRIs, " anxiety attack " is the default

diagnosis.

The biggest irony is that SSRI's were NEVER designed for GAD or other anxiety disorders. They are for depression, but like anxiety being a default diagnosis, so SSRI's are the default medication today for ANY mood disorder or the like. Burns me up because they don't work. Never have and the studies that "show" success are often partisan or the actual "success" falls in the range of chance or placebo. But they have become the number one prescribed according to an article on YAHOO last week. I know some people say they work but they have often taken other steps to help themselves along with it so hard to know.

And I say ANYTIME someone tells you, like the SSRI manufaturers had to start doing to make some sales when the drugs weren't actually helping people, that the medication can take up to 3 months to start working so "don't stop it" they are full of doo doo. No medicine takes months to work unless it is shrinking a tumor.

I personally use the good old fashion "housewives drugs" (seriously there is an ad on the back page of a 70's National Geographic for Valium calling it the Housewives drug!) like valium, xanax, etc. I know the stigma attached to those, but anxiety usually isn't so long term they do so much better on them. Just have to give the lecture about NOT using them all the time and long term, and not to "anticipate" the anxiety and take them when the anxiety is not actually there....yet.

My doc gave me Buspar and Lorazapam in 2007 for anxiety. I took eah one once and never took it again. I wanted to deal with the root cause of the problem and bandaid it. I root cuase was heath anxiety compounded by massive work stress. Got rid of both and started treating the PA and much better now.

Of course that is the best route. You handled it well. Unfortunately too many want that super quick fix in the pill. Half the time those pills cause more problems than they fix though.

I do have severe anxiety, actually it's so bad I have agoraphobia, the issue is

that I'm on spiro right now and my BP is good, but I still get panic attacks.

Can someone tell me if INSPRA is better for the anxiety part, or it is the same

thing ?

I mean if someone tells me hey inspra blocks anxiety better than spiro, I would

see where on earth I can get Inspra ( since it's not avaliable in my country )

Really I mean now I'm happy that my BP is lower and, it is good, hardly ever

over 120/80, except when I'm anxious.

Now what I would like to know is what comes first the high BP or the anxiety ?

I would love to know what have, you guys done, I saw a comment about magnesium

and I guess I'm gonna test that out.

Try to get more K and Mg to see if my Anxiety comes down a bit.

Also my bad bad anxiety came cause of constant PVCs that seem to have started

because of the PA, so in my case PA had a huge role on me becoming agoraphobic.

I'm sick and tired of being sick, I would give my right arm to be normal again,

this anxiety and to not be able to go out is no life for anyone.

At least my BP is controlled :)

Any advice PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE !

TYVM.

You palps should be gone if on enough Spiro. Inspra is available I England. Tiped sad Send form miiPhone ;-)May your pressure be low!CE Grim MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertension

I do have severe anxiety, actually it's so bad I have agoraphobia, the issue is that I'm on spiro right now and my BP is good, but I still get panic attacks.

Can someone tell me if INSPRA is better for the anxiety part, or it is the same thing ?

I mean if someone tells me hey inspra blocks anxiety better than spiro, I would see where on earth I can get Inspra ( since it's not avaliable in my country )

Really I mean now I'm happy that my BP is lower and, it is good, hardly ever over 120/80, except when I'm anxious.

Now what I would like to know is what comes first the high BP or the anxiety ?

I would love to know what have, you guys done, I saw a comment about magnesium and I guess I'm gonna test that out.

Try to get more K and Mg to see if my Anxiety comes down a bit.

Also my bad bad anxiety came cause of constant PVCs that seem to have started because of the PA, so in my case PA had a huge role on me becoming agoraphobic.

I'm sick and tired of being sick, I would give my right arm to be normal again, this anxiety and to not be able to go out is no life for anyone.

At least my BP is controlled :)

Any advice PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE !

Spiro

brought my BP down but didn't touch any of the other symptoms. I switched over to Inspra and couldn't

tell any difference in what I call the " brittles. " Those are now being addressed with Lyme disease

treatment. My life is 80% better

than a year ago. While aldosterone was

a problem, it simply wasn't the only problem.

Hi o,

I can relate to your anxiety issues. After having batteries of test

run on my heart and being seen by two cardiologist due to the heart

palpatations I finally accepted the fact that I wasn't going to die.

I saw an anxiety therapist for a while but no longer am going to

him. Xanax works well for me to control the anxiety however it makes

me extremely tired.

Hang in there and don't give up on life. That is why I sought out

some type of support through this group.

Wish we had the great answer for you as anxiety is miserable. Anxiety, kind of like fatigue, is often so hard to find the answer to. Maybe there's someone (psychiatrist/psychologist) who specializes in anxiety disorders and doesn't lump you in the depression group. CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy ) - is a field that actually looks at the individual and doesn't, hopefully, put you in the same boat as others and show good success with anxiety disorders. Here is a couple articles on anxiety and aldosterone I found:http://linkinghub.elsevier.com/retrieve/pii/S0018506X08000445

Chronic treatment with the mineralocorticoid hormone aldosterone results in increased anxiety-like behavior

AbstractAldosterone is the last component of the

renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system inducing its peripheral effects

via mineralocorticoid receptors (MR). Brain MR bind preferentially

glucocorticoids. So far, the role of MR in behavioral functions has

been investigated almost exclusively in relation to glucocorticoids.

Recently, aldosterone itself has been linked to affective disorders.

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that chronic elevation

of circulating levels of aldosterone leads to increased anxiety. We

have investigated the effects of chronic aldosterone treatment on (1)

anxiety-like behavior, and (2) basal and stress-induced levels of

selected hormones. Forty male Wistar rats were subcutaneously implanted

with osmotic minipumps and treated with aldosterone (2 µg/100 g/day) or

vehicle for two weeks. Aldosterone concentrations in plasma showed a

mild (approximately four-fold) increase at the end of two-week

aldosterone treatment. This mild hyperaldosteronism resulted in a

significant enhancement of anxiety as demonstrated by alterations in

all indicators of anxiety-like behavior measured in the open field and

elevated plus-maze tests, without significant changes in measures of

general locomotor activity. Aldosterone treatment affected not only the

spatiotemporal measures of anxiety, but also the ethological parameters

related to exploration and risk assessment. Chronic treatment with

aldosterone was associated with increased water intake and decreased

plasma renin activity, but failed to modify basal or stress-induced

activity of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenocortical axis. The results

provide evidence on anxiogenic action of prolonged increase in

circulating aldosterone concentrations. Thus, aldosterone may represent

an important target for future antidepressant and anxiolytic drug

development.

Anxiety and stress among science students. Study of calcium and magnesium alterations

Summary : Stress and anxiety

of university science students (Chemistry) was evaluated in basal

conditions and during exams using validated stress and anxiety

questionnaires. The relations between the data obtained and various

biochemical markers were established. Results showed that the evaluated

students did not experience stress increase as a consequence of exams

but suffered a significant increase in anxiety. The psychological

findings agree with the urinary biomarkers studied. It is known that

anxiety is related to partial magnesium reduction associated with a

urinary magnesium excretion increase, as observed in the present data.

Nevertheless, stress also correlates with a urinary calcium increase

which was not detected in the present study.Subject: Re: PA and AnxietyTo: hyperaldosteronism Date: Saturday, April 23, 2011, 4:52 PM

According to a well-known psychologist, anxiety causes OCD causes rage causes depression.....etc. Hence, all these psychological disorders are related and chained together some are genetic hereditary from anxious parents or parents with many psychological disorders...and if one is immediately not cured then others arrive one after the other.

For me, a lot of the sudden anxiety felt in the wee hours of the morning was corrected by either the Spiro or the increase in K due to the Spiro and a dietary increase of K, however there was another kind of anxiety that has been harder to rid myself of, and that is an emotional residue from being so sick for so long. When my PA was at its worst I became afraid to go anywhere in case an attack of complete exhaustion or paralysis came on. I was afraid of getting stuck someplace without enough energy to return home or even to the car. As Spiro, increased K and lowered Na have worked their magic my fear is lessening greatly, but still if I'm going to take a significant walk somewhere I like my husband to go with me just in case I need him to go get the car because I just can't make it. That hasn't happened for 7 months now, but it was a factor

for me for so many years that it's hard to accept that it won't suddenly come back.I think that there is a fair amount of emotional damage that comes with PA. First it's the feeling so crummy with a bizarre set of symptoms, then it's the being flaked off by doctor after doctor as some sort of lunatic who makes up symptoms and by-the-way just happens to have low K and HTN. Then later comes the crippling effects as PA runs rampant. Many, if not most, of us have been pretty traumatized by the time we are finally diagnosed and it has affected every aspect of our lives. We all had good reason to limit our activities when we were so sick and it's a habit that can become ingrained. In a way it's a bit like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and it takes time to give oneself a new message.I hope all of you can be kind to yourselves and not beat yourself up for having anxiety attacks. Some

of it may be physical and begin to work itself out with different medications, but the part that may be emotional may just take time, understanding and recognizing that you've come through a very difficult experience. arrived. I am just curious on what the

I have not been taking my magnesium and I was feeling incredibly overwhelmed today. Amazing what one dose will do to lessen the anxiety. Have you ever had your magnesium checked? I have read that blood levels are not as accurate as cellular levels, but when I asked a dr. to check - I forgot the name of the test he sort of laughed at me. I do feel much better when I take it.I guess my question is do we with PA need to have all our minerals checked regularly? 40 yo WF, 5 kids, Marine Corps wife, Ladenoma producing aldo, diagnosed 2007, HTN since 2004To: hyperaldosteronism Sent: Thu, April 21, 2011 3:13:21 PMSubject: Re: PA and Anxiety

Why does PA seems to spike anxiety disorders? Is it the Aldo causing it? Long before I was diagnosed my Doc kept telling me I had GAD. I went to see a head doc before a big test at Mayo and he told me I had Obsessive Compulsive and GAD. I am like Duhhhhhh. If you are facing a possible life threating diagnois, isnt that to be expected. That was the whole point of going to see him was to work through the anxiety and perhpas ease it a bit. Was a waste of time. I was never really much of a worrier until my PA symptoms arrived. I am just curious on what the connection is, if any.

well if you lose K you're supposed to lose magnesium so the science says. I

have never had my mag checked but I bet the NP I see would do it.

I knew mag reputation helps with anxiety but I was also having an issue with a -

new for me - tingling in only the right side of my face- what we call

trigeminal neuralgia. But it never happened with the low K even at it worst so I

knew it was something else.

Just reading I learned about K loss also = mag loss and anxiety so I tried the

mag and honestly I also felt it in one dose. And the neuralgia is not there but

comes back if I miss a few doses (because it bugs my stomach sometimes.
