Many labs don't do the potassium draw right so your potassium can still be low.

It does sound like you have PA but need to know what units lab used for Aldo

Renin test.

borderline hypertension 6 years ago, although it was dismissed as primary

hypertension then after some tests. I had a few strange episodes about 15

months ago where I felt like I was going to pass out, and kept feeling very

dizzy and almost like I was hugely hungover. My GP said it was because I had

high BP and prescribed amlodipine which did seem to help - I felt better and BP

came down.

methyldopa til induction at term after developing mild PE. I then was very

seriously ill post-partum with numerous problems, culminating in possible

eclampsia on day 4. Since then (now 10 months on) I've just never really

recovered properly.

sinus tachy but makes me feel like I'm going to pass out. BP up and down, meds

changed to amlodipine and ramipril but not responding, eventually put on

bisoprolol which stabilised my heart rate and BP seemed more under control.

However, headache (constant since baby born) continues, weak, fatigued and

overwhelming dizziness through my whole body. I also urinate all the time, even

more so at night. Have been tested for lots of things to no avail, but now

turns out one was missed and it might be PA.

>

> Aldo/renin results done in Oct were - Aldo 580, renin 0.2. I was on

amlodipine and rampiril when this was taken, and beta blocker for 1.5 days, so

hopefully didn't interfere too much. Am due to have saline suppression test

shortly so off beta blockers and heart rate as gone very high again, am now v

breathless and unable to tolerate any exercise whatsoever (not really ideal with

a baby! so am unable to care for baby either just now). I had my potassium

levels checked last week and they were fine, sodium I think was high end of

normal. I had an MRI a few weeks ago which did find a 1.6cm tumour on right

adrenal gland, but apparently it didn't look fatty so they don't think it was a

Conn's tumour??? (They didn't know about the aldo/renin result however then).

a baby makes this almost impossible to deal with. I know the AVS will be

recommended if it is but I don't think I can last any longer off beta blockers

or without starting treatment..yet I would really want surgery if that is an

option for me. I've no idea how I could get through the weeks however.

thanks so much for replying, where can I find out more about doing the potassium

draw correctly? I just had it done as a normal blood test at GP last week

(although I know I've had it checked before and never been told it's low, not to

say it isn't though).

When you say units for the aldo/renin test, it was in pmol/l (aldo) and

pmol/l/hr (renin) - think that's what you mean?

thanks that helps.

does anyone know if my test results so far suggest it probably is PA?

I'm hsving the salt test on Wed, not looking forward to it at all as feeling

very ill indeed, but hopefully it'll pass soon enough.

This is what you pay your other Drs for I presume. It is PA till proven otherwise.CE Grim MDPS: I am available in and one on one consultation arrangement for 1 year to answer you and all of your teams questions.thanks, sorry I don't know what thumbnail is? Am new to all this. Will ask what normal level at hospital is as I haven't been told, just that the ratio suggests PA.Can I ask if you have any idea if the tumour found could still be PA? I'm very confused by the suggestion it wasn't fatty so didn't show Conn's. I know I'm going to have to have the AVS soon but hoping it is one sided as I really want surgery if at all feasible.> > > > > >> > > > > > Sorry in advance for a long post, I'm new to all this.> > > > > >> > > > > > I am 29 female, slim, non-smoker etc etc and was first noted > > to have borderline hypertension 6 years ago, although it was > > dismissed as primary hypertension then after some tests. There is a medical center in England that some on here say is the is the best to

treat PA. Have tried to search postings to find the name but at this time can't

find it. It is one of the places they remove only the tumor and leave the gland

in place.

Fiona,I too am a breastfeeding mother with PA. Diagnosed with HTN after 3rd baby at 34 yo. Took hydrochlorathiazide for awhile, but have been able to control HTN with a very low salt diet. Do not want to stop nursing to take spiro, but as BP is averaging 120/80 now dr, is OK with me waiting. (Thank you Dr. Grim for all I have learned from you here in that regard).Low salt has really helped me and though it can be a bit of a pain while trying to feed a growing family and cook they have been great and even my salt adoring husband (who probably needs more as he is a hard charging Marine who PT's like mad has gotten used to Mrs. Dash.Just wanted you to know there is someone else out there nursing her little one and dealing with PA. I was diagnosed when #4 was less than a year and I was soooooo weak and felt

terrible. I now have five and feel pretty good. I recently had a salt infusion done and still feel some effects. I think my magnesium is low as my heart rate has increased to about 80 beats per minute as opposed to the normal 60. After a dose of liquid magnesium it goes back to 60. Dr. Grim - where can I find the info on PA affecting calcium. I have been pregnant and nursing for the better part of 11 years and thought my need for calcium was a result of that, but I do know others who have more children and don't seem to require it.Enough for now, 40 yo WF, homeschooling mother of 5, Marine Corps wife preparing to move back to home base and then on to new duty stationFrom:

Sorry in advance for a long post, I'm new to all this.

I am 29 female, slim, non-smoker etc etc and was first noted to have borderline hypertension 6 years ago, although it was dismissed as primary hypertension then after some tests. I had a few strange episodes about 15 months ago where I felt like I was going to pass out, and kept feeling very dizzy and almost like I was hugely hungover. My GP said it was because I had high BP and prescribed amlodipine which did seem to help - I felt better and BP came down.

I got pregnant 4 months later and BP was OK til around 20 weeks, when I was on methyldopa til induction at term after developing mild PE. I then was very seriously ill post-partum with numerous problems, culminating in possible eclampsia on day 4. Since then (now 10 months on) I've just never really recovered properly.

I've been back in hospital twice with elevated BP and tachycardia - always sinus tachy but makes me feel like I'm going to pass out. BP up and down, meds changed to amlodipine and ramipril but not responding, eventually put on bisoprolol which stabilised my heart rate and BP seemed more under control. However, headache (constant since baby born) continues, weak, fatigued and overwhelming dizziness through my whole body. I also urinate all the time, even more so at night. Have been tested for lots of things to no avail, but now turns out one was missed and it might be PA.

Aldo/renin results done in Oct were - Aldo 580, renin 0.2. I was on amlodipine and rampiril when this was taken, and beta blocker for 1.5 days, so hopefully didn't interfere too much. Am due to have saline suppression test shortly so off beta blockers and heart rate as gone very high again, am now v breathless and unable to tolerate any exercise whatsoever (not really ideal with a baby! so am unable to care for baby either just now). I had my potassium levels checked last week and they were fine, sodium I think was high end of normal. I had an MRI a few weeks ago which did find a 1.6cm tumour on right adrenal gland, but apparently it didn't look fatty so they don't think it was a Conn's tumour??? (They didn't know about the aldo/renin result however then).

Does this sound like PA? I hope so as I'm getting a little desperate, having a baby makes this almost impossible to deal with. I know the AVS will be recommended if it is but I don't think I can last any longer off beta blockers or without starting treatment..yet I would really want surgery if that is an option for me. I've no idea how I could get through the weeks however.

Thanks

Fiona

Thanks for all the support, nice to hear from you . Unfortunately am not

nursing my daughter as was in intensive care after she was born and very ill for

several weeks afterwards..s big regret of mine but not much I can do about that

unfortunately :(

I had the saline test today and went to the toilet 8 times which I thought was

alot, although I kept being told by all the nurses that it wasn't given how much

saline I'd had and the fact I'd had a cup of tea and half a jug of water. Yet I

read on here that passing that much urine would be highly indicative of PA.

Which is correct please?

Also Dr has refused to prescribe me anything else until test results back in 2

weeks (although given the number of bank holidays coming up, whether this will

be actually 2 weeks I don't know). Potassium levels checked again and

apparently normal.

I'm feeling pretty down right now I have to say, the Drs just don't seem to

understand how ill I am.

I do not know what alot means. Need numbers of cc, cups, teaspoons, ml, liters, gallone pints quarts . etc. The nurses do not know of what they speak unless they are only testing PAs.Need your thumbnail please. There are over 500 on here.Thanks.CE Grim MDThanks for all the support, nice to hear from you . Unfortunately am not nursing my daughter as was in intensive care after she was born and very ill for several weeks afterwards..s big regret of mine but not much I can do about that unfortunately :(I had the saline test today and went to the toilet 8 times which I thought was alot, although I kept being told by all the nurses that it wasn't given how much saline I'd had and the fact I'd had a cup of tea and half a jug of water. Yet I read on here that passing that much urine would be highly indicative of PA. Which is correct please? Also Dr has refused to prescribe me anything else until test results back in 2 weeks (although given the number of bank holidays coming up, whether this will be actually 2 weeks I don't know). Potassium levels checked again and apparently normal.I'm feeling pretty down right now I have to say, the Drs just don't seem to understand how ill I am. > >> > > > Subject: being tested for PA> > To: hyperaldosteronism > > Date: Sunday, April 10, 2011, 6:06 AM> >> >> > Sorry in advance for a long post, I'm new to all this.> >> > I am 29 female, slim, non-smoker etc etc and was first noted to have > > borderline hypertension 6 years ago, although it was dismissed as > > primary hypertension then after some tests. Hi,

I was also diagnosed when my third was tiny and still breastfeeding - or rather

my extreme blood pressure was picked up at my postpartum check, the diagnosis

took a further year. But at least it means I know it was a sudden onset since my

blood pressure was regularly monitored while I was pregnant so I know I was fine

then.

My 'baby' is now coming up for two and I've been advised pregnancy would be a

bad plan until I've had surgery but actually I don't really have any symptoms

apart from the high blood pressure (it was 170/115 when I went for the post

partum check so it's way outside the 'normal' zone). So I can only feel sympathy

for you having to deal wtih it all - new baby exhaustion is enough without being

ill on top.

Hugs,

Hester

high BP and prescribed amlodipine which did seem to help - I felt better and BP

shortly so off beta blockers and heart rate as gone very high again, am now v

breathless and unable to tolerate any exercise whatsoever (not really ideal with

a baby! so am unable to care for baby either just now). I had my potassium

Sorry what is a thumbnail here? I don't know!

I had 2 litres of saline infused over the four hours, in that time I drank one

cup of tea and approx 600-700mls of water (this is an estimate but think that's

about right). Nurses have never done this test (or even heard about it) before.

I reckon I peed about 2 litres in the 4 hours.

Often women with PA BP gets better during pregnancy but bumps way up after. This is because progesterone is very high during pregnancy and is a MCB. You almost certainly had some PA before the 3rd. I would recommend you get all of your BPs as far back as you can and plot them. 170/115 is a BP that needs to be managed NOW. What are they doing? What is your BP at home?CEG Hi,I was also diagnosed when my third was tiny and still breastfeeding - or rather my extreme blood pressure was picked up at my postpartum check, the diagnosis took a further year. You have PA based on the urine volume. Take them my review article so they will be ready for the next ones they see.How many times a night do you get up to pee now or before MCBA thumbnail is a line or two to tell me who you are so I can keep you apart more or less from the other 500 on here.Look at some recent posts. Thanks so much, very reassuring. Go to the toilet 3-10 times a night, some

nights much worse than others! Pregnancy thing makes sense too - ill before got

pregnant, amlodipine helped, pregnancy not too bad, then very ill since.

Fiona

You have classical hyperaldsoteronism based on your story and labs. Have you reviewed your family Hx in great Detail for HTN, or Low K or early stroke, and age and cause of death as far back as you go.You young age suggests possible inherited forms of PA.I don't recall you mentioned muscle aches and pains and cramps in hands and feet and periods of near paralysis? Have you been tried on spiro yet? Why: BP will be controlled without other drugs.Getting up at night to pee will go awayK problems will go away.DASH like your life depended on it.Thanks so much, very reassuring. Go to the toilet 3-10 times a night, some nights much worse than others! Pregnancy thing makes sense too - ill before got pregnant, amlodipine helped, pregnancy not too bad, then very ill since. Fiona29, female, high BP for 7 years, currently being tested for PA (awaiting saline suppression results)> > > > > >> > > > > > From: munchkinthescrunchkin <fiona_j_mcgregor@>> > > > > > Subject: being tested for PA> > > > > > To: hyperaldosteronism > > > > > > Date: Sunday, April 10, 2011, 6:06 AM> > > > > >> > > > > >> > > > > > Sorry in advance for a long post, I'm new to all this.> > > > > >> > > > > > I am 29 female, slim, non-smoker etc etc and was first noted > > to> > > > have> > > > > > borderline hypertension 6 years ago, although it was > > dismissed as> > > > > > primary hypertension then after some tests.
