My only concern is that the same argument advanced by the OBCE and UWS could be used by almost any other health care Board to justify the inclusion of short thrust spinal manipulation to be within the course and scope of a whole host of other licensed health care professions. Maybe that's what those advancing the issue actually want--any willing licensed and trained provider--I'm not saying it's bad. Just that by smashing down the door to get out, there's no longer a door to keep others from getting in. You can't have it both ways. You'll get dry needling. First, politically medicine is great at being your friend when it serves them and has no problem being your enemy the next day once you have served your purpose for them. Case in point circa 1985 our lay lobbyist Chuck agreed to help the Oregon Medical Association defeat an optometrist bill giving them prescription authority (they got it later any way and should have) and the OMA helped us defeat a physical therapy bill that would have given them direct access (they got it any way later…60 days) and what we got was the optometrists and the PTs both mad at us…great long term strategy eh?…thank you lay lobbyist! Attempting to suppress other professions isn’t in anyone’s best interest including the chiropractic profession we simply have to have a better product or products and if we do provide better services for certain conditions then the consumers will naturally come to us for those services….provided we have a level playing field as per insurance coverage and equal access to patients as per organized medicine. If you help others get what they want you end up getting what you want….I (this is just Vern Saboe speaking not the OCA) believe we should work with all the other health care professions outside of organized medicine to achieve that level playing field for all of us and then let the market place determine who they wish to go to for what services. If we as chiropractic physicians provide better services for certain conditions or for health and wellness promotion then consumers will come to us provided we have that level playing field…the goal should be that level playing field. Last legislative session the OCA worked this to perfection we the naturopathic physicians, nurse practitioners, optometrists, acupuncturists and massage therapists all worked together to achieve non-discrimination (that level playing field) within the coming “Coordinated Care Organizations” and we did it together (strength in numbers). When the Oregon Medical Association, the Oregon Hospital Association, the medical IPAs attacked we prevailed because we worked harder, faster and smarter and we did so from a position of strength!
