I usually just lurk, but I just received my first piece of ambergris in the mail

and can't help commenting on it!  I ordered it from Adrienne of Ambergris

Essentials who selected a piece for me that was pale grey and white--mostly

sweet in scent (rather than musky or marine.)  She thoughtfully included a chip

of dark grey ambergris for comparison that was much heavier and

marine-smelling.  They are both pretty amazing!!

While I'm thinking about tincturing the ambergris eventually, I was wondering if

anyone out there has any advice on proper storage.  Is there any way of storing

it that preserves, or even improves its scent?

Regards,

L.

Hi L.

How fun for you!  I really love ambergris and it's great you got a couple to

compare because they really are different.  Ambergris will pick up smells so you

want to store it away from your other aromatics.  Also, my understanding is that

you want it to breathe.  I keep my solid ambergris wrapped in a piece of paper

in a small wooden box on a shelf with my bottles.

Hi

Just noticed your post and realised that I should have mentioned that you can

safely store the raw product in a small cardboard/paper box or paper bag for

some time/years. (It is mainly important not to seal or wrap it in plastic.)If

you wrap it in a fragment of cotton material; this is also ok. You can make a

nice " keepsake " in this way as the material will slowly take up the fragrance of

the piece over time. It can be safely kept in a drawer or on a mantel as long as

it is kept away from direct heat and strong sun.

Best Regards Adrienne

Thanks to Elise and Adrienne for the advice on storage. I guess it makes sense

to let the stuff breathe, since it cures by rolling around in the ocean and

sitting on the beach!!! I will *not* be keeping it in plastic!!
