Bleu, Have you had your B's tested? I don't recall most of the

specifics anymore, but I spent several years trying to cure myself

by correcting vitamin and mineral imbalances. What I found was the

B12 injections didn't do much, but B-complex was pretty miraculous

for me in symptom releif. And the word is, that the Bs can get out

of balance really easily. Are you sure you should be taking B-6

alone? Usually Bs are advised to be taken together, unless you have

a known defeciency in one of them. I bought all the Bs seperately,

and experimented with them, but found that the complex was by far

the most helpful. B's are critical and an imbalance can really set

off some strange reactions in the body. I hope you're careful.

Yes Bleu, I think Penny is correct, we need to make sure we balance

our B's. I was taking a B complex and then tried experimenting with

extra B6 and I quickly got into trouble, I am not an angry person at

all but I became very angry with anyone, eg a guy came to the door to

sell something and I was hard pressed not to punch him, I felt so

aggressive towards him for no reason at all. I told my nutritional doc

and he said this could happen with taking extra B6 and thus

unbalancing the synergy with magnesium and zinc. I went back to the B

complex alone and stopped feeling like punching people!

The RDA daily amount of recommended B6 is 2.0 I take 4 mg of it in my

B complex. People with CMT should be careful not to take megadoses of

this. So something like 10 mg would definitely be a megadose. You might

want to check this with your doctor too. See here for much information.

I've also noticed that eating two avocados causes nerve pain/unpleasant

sensations. I looked up the nutritional facts on avocados and, lo and behold,

they have high amounts of B6 in them.

Hello Gretchen,

I looked everywhere for a study showing that more than 20 mg is harmful for CMT.

A very well known naturopath in Portland said we can have up to 250 mg.

Could you send us a copy showing us the study you have?

Thank you,

Kay

Hi Kay,

Here is the info from CMT expert Dr. Gareth Parry. Perhaps you and your

naturopath may want to get in touch with him before you begin taking B6

megadoses.

Vitamin B6 Use in CMT: – by Gareth J. Parry, M.D.

The RDA (recommended daily allowance) of vitamin B6 is 2 mg and the MDR (minimum

daily requirement is 0.1-0.2 mg). The amount in a typical

multivitamin is 5 mg although many have 10 mg and, obviously, some have 8 mg.

There are several products available over the counter that contain 20 mg.

All the research that has been done indicates that all of these doses are safe

for normal people and I am not concerned for my CMT patients at these doses.

Larger dose tablets can be found - there used to be a 500 mg tablet!

In our studies, the lowest dose that we found to be definitely toxic to nerves

was 500 mg daily; we had one patient who was adamant that she was taking only

200 mg daily who developed nerve damage although she was also taking a lot of

B6-rich foods.

One doctor in London, England claims that 50 mg daily can be toxic to the nerves

but no one else has been able to show that.

In summary, I tell my patients under no circumstances should they take more than

20 mg daily and I prefer them to take no more than 10 mg daily. 8 mg daily is

certainly safe.

What this tells me, is there are no controlled studies to be cited. However,

anecdotal information is not completely worthless. And, 500 mg is pretty 'high'

to be 'low'.

Hi Geri,

I just started watching my B6. I was told by every Doctor I could take up to

250 mg. Could someone tell me what B-Complex they are taking that is low in B6?

Thank you,

Kay
