Guest guest
Thank you Dr. Saboe for posting this. This sure was a hot button issue while I was attending UWS last year and this article helps put those arguments into perspective. I feel that the students were really hit hard with these issues and really had to do some soul searching to figure out what chiropractic meant to them. During part 4 boards we had students from around the country talk about this subject while we were waiting to take the test. Made for some really good dialogue and respect for each others points of view. Can't we all just get along? I love my profession and what we do for our patients.(Btw, I know i just joined but I hope that I'm allowed to post in here...) Click here Fellow ACA Member, Don't we all want to see our profession move forward? You and I were taught to do so much for our patients when we were in chiropractic college. Once in practice, we encountered many forces--such as insurers, the medical profession, and limited scopes of practice--that have made it difficult for us to fully use our training as doctors of chiropractic. This has limited the success of many practices and denied so many patients the rewards of our services. So, you can appreciate how surprised I am to see the repeated efforts of some within our own profession to attempt to stifle the growth of institutions that lead this profession in a direction to grow our practices and better serve our patients. For example, this week in Atlanta, Ga., there will be a meeting of DCs who disagree with the determination that the Council on Chiropractic Education (CCE) received continuing recognition by the U.S. Department of Education to serve as the accreditation agency for the chiropractic colleges. Rather than work with the new CCE leadership to improve CCE as the vital organization it is, they are intent on misrepresenting that agency's work. I believe you should be fully informed about all aspects of the subject; this article sums up the issues from multiple viewpoints. As I travel representing ACA, I see the efforts of certain groups with a limited mandate trying to inhibit the efforts of legitimate voices for the growth of this profession. They use their members' resources to attempt to limit progressive thought and debate. In doing so, it appears they prefer to divert our attention towards a focus on historical internal squabbles at a time when the practices of other types of providers are growing as they celebrate victory after victory in the new health care paradigm. As you review these organizations, I invite you to study what they actually deliver in member service and how they propose to advance this great profession we share. In contrast, consider all that ACA has accomplished during just the last year: ACA has ensured that DCs can share in any savings/bonuses of ACOs; secured changes in "meaningful use" for DCs in EHRs so they are not required to write drug prescriptions; convened a team of experts and issued information about how to appropriately respond to Medicare audits and guide you through the appeals process; led in the filing of a class action lawsuit against United Healthcare/Optum Health in response to restrictions of care, ERISA violations, and recoupements; successfully challenged NFL prohibitions on players' access to seeing a DC for workman's compensation related conditions; placed numerous ACA leaders in press and radio interviews representing the profession to the public; filed and advocated for federal bills to increase the services of DCs through the VA system and to make their services more available to our active military; and staged National Chiropractic Health Month, an annual public awareness campaign. ACA answers member questions about insurance issues, offers continuing education, provides weekly and monthly publications, and offers discounted pricing on many useful products and services. ACA's goal is to secure full access to the services of DCs without the historic discrimination placed between our patients and our practices. All our profession's resources should focus on this goal. Studies reveal the public wants to see our health care system less dependent on the use of dangerous medications. The cost of care for patients who should be in our offices, but who are not, is upwards of 40 percent more expensive and is often due to the overuse of prescription pharmaceuticals, tests, and surgeries. Full access for our patients would foster needed health improvements and cost savings. In summary, ACA builds value for its membership and focuses your voice in actions that advance this profession. Your ACA leaders work with CCE and other legitimate voices of our profession to enlarge the opportunities for your future practice so you can be successful and provide patients with all the care you were trained to perform. May I close by asking that you do your colleagues a favor?
