Variety in Training?

There is the age-old argument about which sort of strength training programme

to use:

1. A program which uses a small number of well-tried exercises and a few

variations

2. A program uses many variations regularly.

A major argument argument in favour of Method 1 is that there is less

tendency for the athlete to become stiff and suffer DOMS by having to adapt

all the time to different novel exercises. Another argument is that this

approach requires less equipment and requires far less time.

A major argument in favour of Method 2 is that the frequent use of variety

prevents stagnation physiologically and mentally.

Would anyone care to comment on each of the above approaches and suggest

which one is superior in sports training, giving reasons and references to

support your point of view?
