This follows the initial announcement by HHS in February that the deadline would be postponed. The delay comes as a result of feedback from the American Medical Association, the American Hospital Association, and the provider community, who expressed concerns about the challenges and administrative burdens that implementing ICD-10 will place upon providers. The full release can be found on the CMS website. Though the deadline has been postponed, it is still important to continue to prepare for this transition. The ACA has a web page dedicated to ICD-10, which can be found at www.acatoday.org/icd10. Podcast: Navigating Chiropractic Networks In today's podcast, ACA President Overland, DC, discusses how to navigate the complex world of chiropractic networks. Additionally, Dr. Overland encourages DCs to visit ACA's Chiropractic Networks Action Center for multiple resources that can help combat inappropriate network practices. Listen here. Kentucky Law Limits Arbitrary Reductions in Chiropractic Care Over the past several years, the Kentucky Association of Chiropractors (KAC) has worked to bring the inappropriate practices of insurers using third-party administrators and provider networks to the attention of the Kentucky Department of Insurance (KY-DOI). Until now, KY-DOI had lacked the statutory authority to remedy this situation. With the assistance of the KY-DOI, the KAC drafted legislative language to eliminate this practice. Yesterday, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear, signed H.B. 497 into law. This law will limit private insurance companies and their third-party administrators (TPAs) from arbitrarily reducing services provided by DCs that are allowed for in a patient's health plan. This is a huge victory in Kentucky and it will serve as model legislation throughout the country. Additionally, this important component will allow DCs to better treat their patients. TPAs and insurers will be required to re-write or amend provider agreements to comply with this new law. Click here for the history of this bill's passage and links to statutory language that re-enforces the new law, complete with penalties for non-compliance. Harvard Study Links Obesity and Sleep Deprivation A recent Harvard University study has found a link between sleep deprivation and instances of diabetes and obesity. According to the research, male participants who received less than 5.6 hours of sleep in a 24-hour period--over the course of three weeks--showed a decrease in their metabolic rate and insulin production. Furthermore, researchers discovered that slow metabolic rates due to erratic sleep contributed to a 12.5-pound weight increase over the course of a year despite no changes in exercise and food intake. In The Media Runner Relied on Chiropractic Care to Get back into Game In April 2010, Yahoo! contributor H. Sloan had just completed his 14th half marathon and had lost 50 pounds. Unfortunately, instead of feeling strong and healthy, Sloan's back hurt so much that he decided to stop racing. More than a year later, after the break from running didn't ease his back pain (and half the weight had returned), Sloan saw a doctor of chiropractic. The DC adjusted Sloan's back and talked to him about good nutrition and posture. After just a couple of weeks, Sloan had more energy, could sit comfortably at his desk at work and was ready to run again. He attributes his second full marathon finish in December 2011 to chiropractic care, and he has a full racing schedule planned for the months ahead.
