Just save those " bad " foods for your freeday. That really helps me -

knowing that I can have them on freeday. They are not offlimits, you're

just going to have them later.

Keep busy during your trigger times. And make sure you eat all six meals.

If you get through the first week, the cravings tend to lessen or

disappear. Then it's a lot easier. So.. suck it up and suffer ;) (not

the advice you wanted, heh?)

And as Diane says, it *really* helps to tell yourself you can have

that treat on your free day.

Modify that to say, " If you get through the first week WITHOUT JUNK FOOD... "

Its hard to get the food part started. Here are a couple of things to try.

1. when you want something, write it down. Keeping a list of foods for free

day is a great trick. On freeday you can look at the list and decide what

you want to eat. I have found that a lot of those whims aren't really what I

want once I can have them.

2. Find a way to make a healthier version. This works depending on what you

crave. (Icecream, burgers, etc, can be made bfl)

3. figure out if you want salty, creamy, crunchy, etc and find something

that is a bfl alternative for that.

4. make sure you are drinking your water

5. Don't buy it. your husband, kids, roommate or dog won't die without it.

If you are buying " treats " for these people and then eating them, buy them

treats you hate or can resist. If you live alone, bag up all the crap in

your house that isn't bfl friendly and give it away. One of my favorite

parts of freeday is the anticipation of the shopping trip for whatever i

want to eat. I try to get single serve portions, but if its something like a

pie, eat your piece and give it away. If you can't give it away, pretend

someone ate it and throw it away.

I found that during my first challenge, several years ago, what got me

through some tough cravings times were the " candy bar " -like protein

bars. Now I know that these aren't something anyone should make a habit

of eating, but my first challenge was during the Easter season, and that

is the only thing that kept me on plan. I'd eat one in the afternoon,

and feel like I was really having a cheat, which then made me not feel

the need to eat the other stuff.

Also, I third the point about free day - that's exactly what it's there

for. Just tell yourself that if you don't eat that tempting food now,

you can have it on your next free day.

Hi Sheila,

Thank you for all the great ideas. I really like the writing

the " unauthorized " food down/keeping the list for free day. That

sounds like a great idea. I also think me getting more organized

would help. Maybe on the weekend I can make the healthier versions

of treats like you suggested and freeze them for the week. I bought

the book Eating for LIfe and a lot of the treats they offer use diet

sugar which I do not want to use. Do you know of an alternative to

diet sugars in the recipes?

Thanks again for your great suggestions! I appreciate your help.

Hi Dana,

I definitey didn't make it through the first week without a binge :(

but I'm not going to give up. I have to respect that this is new to

me and celebrate the successes I have had, like 2 days of clean

eating and committing to exercising and hitting my intensity marks

(pom poms out-- yahoo me). I understand what you are trying to tell

me and I wish so badly I can do that..maybe someday I will be able

to..I'm hopeful!! I've been a HUGE emotional eater for 20 years so I

know it is going to take me time, and that's ok. I appreciate your

advice and will work to become stronger and ignoring my junk food

urges. I hope you are doing well on your program...all my best,

sculptmestrong :)

Hi ,

I think that sounds like a great idea. I really do think I need to

have those legal " treats " to fool me as well. I have had a terrible

junk food habit for many years so I will have to trick myself into

thinking I haven't abruptly abandoned it...emotinally my body has

depended on it. I will definitely purchase some myloplex bars this

weekend. Do you happen to know if they have diet sugar in them? I'm

not a fan of diet sugar (get really bad headaches from it). I did try

and tell myself about the free day coming up but for some reason I

just couldn't hold out....maybe it will get easier as the weeks go

on. I really appreciate your suggesions. Hope all is going well on

your program!

HI Diane,

I wish I was able to save the treats for the freeday. I did try,

honestly. For some reason the impulse to eat the free day food

overpowered my desire to be lean and fit. Maybe it will get easier

as time goes on. I'm not going to give up. Thank you for your

suggestions about keeping busy and eating all my meals. I will keep

these in mind and work really hard to distract myself from sabatoging

behaviors! Hope all is going well on your program.

Splenda? is that the diet sugar they recommend? (I'm too lazy to go to

kitchen and get book)

A substitute would depend on your goals, some people might use less real

sugar, some might use honey, etc.

That's one of the tenets of the program -- do your best, celebrate the

successes, and don't stress about the rest.

Good luck, you'll do fine! Dana

Hi, I'm new to BFL. M

Welcome. If you stick to BFL beyond 12 weeks, you will learn new

habits. with the 2 steps forward 1 step backwards human frailty,

honest, habit building way we humans operate <G> Good luck and be

kind to yourself!

I suggest you track you food for free in fitday.com

This keeps me REALLY honest!!!

If I am pulled to a cookie, I think, ummm do I want a written record

of this on fitday.com?

hahaha it works for me

I also say every day:

Is it worth it (this piece of chocolate)

Perhaps sometimes it is worth it, a really good treat.

But the usual hersheys' mini chocolates or kisses or m & m's, they'll

still be around next week, next year, I choose to skip it

It's your choice at every moment: healthy and feeling good and strong

and proud

Or impulsive compulsive in the moment for a second, but on your hips

for a month

Choose!

> I love to eat junk and I'm

> finding it hard to resist. Does anyone have any tips?

> I guess my payoff from the junk food at that moment is bigger than

> BUT I SO WANT TO BE FIT and LEAN.

> If there's anyone out there that can relate to me and have overcome

MOST of us can relate to this. It is totally the way humans work,

self-sabotage. Once you know you do this, you choose it at every

moment, being conscious, or you choose your " desire to be fit and

lean. " Along with giving in to sabotage comes the added payoff of

hating oneself. At least that's how it is with me.

be kind!
