Guest guest
Wow , what a frustrating thing to happen with the Turbo Kick class. I've done things like that too (always on already bad days it seems). I'm so glad though that the Danny Sullivan workout ended up being a great alternative for you and the tae bo too! Wow! How awesome that is that you took lemons and turned them into wonderful lemonade!! An angsty workout for Thursday Well I've been pms-ing and near tears/crying all day but was counting down the minutes to to go to Turbo Kick class. I went all the way to the gym, lugging my my 8lb purse and 15 lb workout bag with me. I get to the locker room and get all my stuff unpacked, only to discover that I forgot my workout pants and sports bras I almost started crying then and there and sluggishly put all my belongings back in my workout back and moped to the bus stop home. I was sad and angry so kickboxing was on the agenda. I started with Danny Sullivan's Real Kickboxing, Intermediate Workout #2. This was a virgin, and boy was it FUN FUN FUN! Exactly what I needed! The combos were trickier than in the first one, but not necessarily tougher. I really like these workouts because they have a martial arts feel to them. I'll explain in a minute.Once again, I giggled throughout the jumproping warmup. How can something so simple looking be so hard?? Again I have no trouble doing it with both feet, but the peeps in the video do it alternating feet effortlessly and that's where I trip up, though I did a smidgen better this time. When Danny said, "This is your last combo, so I want you to work it!" or something like that, I felt my face fell. It was over? Already? I was sweaty and a bit tired, but needed more.Next I grabbed Tae-Bo: Impact, his bag workout. I loved it too, but for different reasons. Tae-Bo has better music, and you punch and kick to the music, which is more in line with most aerobics classes and workouts. However, I prefer Danny's workout with no music because it allows you to punch faster and not be a slave to the beat of the music, and that is what you'd do in a real fight. I felt I progressed in my kickboxing because of it. In Real Kickboxing all the exercisers are very good. What I admire about Tae-Bo is that there are several levels of exercisers, and they look like average people, not models. I feel that a home exerciser could relate more to the Tae-Bo exercisers. There's an illusive caring quality about Danny, but .. oh...what can I say. He is just a beautiful, beautiful soul and a man of God. There were times I paused during the workout just to listen to him and watch his facial expressions and I sighed, "I love you, ". He is one man I'd love to meet in person someday. His athletic ability and his genuinely warm heart make him a top notch instructor.I got around an hour and a half in total.I'm subbing my friend's Amp'd Abs class tomorrow. Yikes! I've only taught the 15 minute version of it, but this one is a half an hour! Ug! I'm going to get up early tomorrow and watch Ab Jam and steal the standing ab portion of that to teach to my class. Excited, but nervous too. Wish me luck!

Guest guest
, Wow, what a workout for having a bad day otherwise! I remember when I first started teaching kickboxing (like 1999) I was doing it with the music and all choreographed and had complaints that it wasn't like real martial arts. I was teaching in a hardcore gym that also taught wrestling and other forms of fighting. Because of that initial experience, I learned real quick to teach mine more like a martial arts class when I taught there. I did that for so long that I have a hard time teaching choreography now, but I am in beat with the music, usually. We all develop our own way of teaching I guess, based on what we were originally taught. It's so nice to do other workouts that are outside that comfort zone of what we are use to though, huh? When I do my own workout though and am not teaching or following someone else's routine, I attack the bag as if it were more like a real fight. I was once asked why I didn't tape my hands or wear gloves when I worked with the bag (by a professional boxer who also commented on what great form I had) and my response was that I wasn't doing it for a profession or for a workout, but to prepare for if I ever needed to defend myself. Since I didn't think an attacker would allow me the time to wrap my fists or put on gloves, I figured I'd better strengthen my hands and wrists to be able to handle the impact if I ever had to use it for true self defense. Guess I'm weird because I actually try to do some of each, choreographed, martial arts like drills, and beat the crap out of it self defense so I'm well rounded.
