Guest guest
I thought that Sports Medicine Doctors were less likely to cut people open than say an Orthopedic Surgeon. I saw a Sports Med. Dr. for my knee a couple of times. He was very nice, I liked him. One summer I was pushed into a hole in the grass while playing volleyball (idiot thought I said his name "Mike" when I said "MINE!") and I hurt my "good" knee. I went to the same office but my regular Sports Med. Dr. wasn't in that day and I saw another Dr...who told me that I shouldn't play volleyball. Later when I saw my regular Dr. and asked him if it was all right for me to play he said "well what do you want to do? Sit around playing checkers all day?" My family Dr. said that I should have arthroscopicy on my knee and I told him about that... He said that with my knees it's better to just leave them alone, I did and it healed in about 6 to 8 weeks. So when I finally get my bachelors it will be a Bachelors of Science in Sports Medicine/Athletic Training. I'm not sure why they combine them, but it really opens up some possibilities for the doctorate. Not that I would go into the whole sports med thing because I can't stand the thought of having to cut someone open to help them, but I'm glad to know that the ones here are also learning about the other therapedic modalities such as exercise, massage, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, etc. and not just about doing surgery. The last Sports Med doctor I saw was trained before they combined them and had no clue about anything he couldn't operate on. Yet I had a family practice doctor that was all about prescribing massage and PT. I think it all depends on when they went through school and their way of thinking.Tonya L. -www.smellabella.comwww.trainingwithtonya.com RE: / Monday workout/doctor appt> Now there's something I'd really like to do - what fun to pick her > brain! -> but I live in a very rural area. Guest guest
Jen, I think it is all dependent on how they are trained. I know the sports medicine doctor that I saw in Oklahoma was a surgeon, but also geared toward how to rehab after surgery to prepare for athletics. He did try to do PT instead of surgery once too. Here in South Georgia, they don't seem to believe in PT, at least the ones I've seen. I think it is just because they were taught nothing but surgery and don't know the benefits of exercise on the body. I'm hoping that the change in how they are educated will help with that. Guest guest
I hope that their education does change because surgery isn't the answer to everything, and sometimes makes things worse.
