At my very first lap I was on no meds. My Aldosterone was 55 my

K was 2.8 and my renin was <.1. My endo is changing my meds. Spiro 50 and

titrating me off the lisinopril. CT scan (I have had two) show mass of 19 mm

on right adrenal gland.

We need all test numbers and lab ranges to give

you good information. What did the last CT show? Did Endo have you stop meds

before doing tests? If so for how long? From what Dr grim posts many times many

meds don't work with PA. I believe norvasc and lisinopril are in this group. 25

mg of spiro probably isn't enough to lower B/P.

about 3 years prior. During my physical my BP was 180/110. I have never had

high BP before and for all practical purposes very healthy. When my blood work

came back my K was 2.8. The following week my MD had me come in for another

Blood test to check my Aldosterone - it was 55. She recommended a CT and

results show a mass on my right adrenal glad. It measured 18mm x 10mm. I was

put on spiro 25, norvasc 10, lisinopril 40 over the next 4 months to control my

BP. My BP finally was under control around May 2010. By end of June - back up

running 145/95. I went to a cardiologist and then an endo. My Endo did the 24

urine, blood test, and another CT. All test came back with perfect results and

now I am being scheduled for AVS at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.

As Dr. Grim said, we have a folder in the files section called AVS experiences

at

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/hyperaldosteronism/files/AVS%20Experiences/

You'll see that our experiences very greatly, from very easy to completely

bungled. You MUST find an interventional radiologist who has a lot of

successful experiences with AVS. Personally mine was a piece of cake, I was

back to normal activities the next day.

Good luck,

In at least 50% of cases it is on both sides. Therefore taking out one side does little benefit for long haul. Even with AVS CURE with no drugs is about 75%. As you note AVS is not without risk or cost. So far our biggest AVS bill we have recorded was $40,000. They almost alwAys take out the whole adrenal. Did u read Dr Bravo's article on med Rx in PA. Most folks here are one medical Rx which must include DASHING. Tiped sad Send form miiPhone ;-)May your pressure be low!CE Grim MDSpecializing in DifficultHypertension

Hi,

I posted last week and I'm the stage before - the final lab tests still to be

done but mass (similar size to yours) on right adrenal gland, lowish potassium

etc.etc.

I wanted to know what are the pros and cons of surgery vs. long term meds and

nobody's really answered that on here yet. My perspective is why would you want

to stay on drugs long term when you could have what sounds like a relatively

simple operation and then, hopefully, be drug free for life? Anybody?

Once you've been through the AVS, I'd love to hear your experience too. I'm

still wondering whether I'm completely underestimating the surgery but it

sounds to me like the AVS is nearly as traumatic as the surgery to remove the

growth, so why not just get it taken out instead? How often do you lose the

complete adrenal gland rather than just having the tumour removed?
