Amino Acids - need your help about protein breakdown

Hi everyone,

We are using customised Amino Acids and L-Glutamine (as advised) but can

I pick your brains on a couple of things.

We give 5 gms x 2 /day of the Amino acids; and 7.5 gms of L-glutamine x

2/day..

My question is, is taking amino acids equivalent to eating protein

foods? I'm asking this because DS is on the ketogenic diet where

quantity of proteins, carbs and fats is calculated exact to a

prescription. So I thought last nite that if the amino acids are just

like him having additional protein then I may be giving him too many

proteins as I have not calculated the amino acids into the diet and he

continues to have the full amount of protein foods (meat, eggs etc)

prescribed for him. If this is the case, it brings me to my next

question......

We've had VERY increased urine output as well as increased thirst, and

ketone breath (acetone breath). I know that being on the ketogenic

diet produces ketones and is expected, but we did not have the acetone

breath until he has been on the amino acids. So, the question is if

you have too much protein/aminos can this produce an acetone breath?

I'm not very good at all of this but can the increased urine output be

caused by an excess intake of the amino acids and proteins breaking

down into nitrogen and increasing water loss and puting strain on the

kidneys.

I'd really be grateful for you really smart and knowledgeable parents

to advise or put me right if I am off track here.

TIA

emily
