Dr - I fail to see in the current Back Talk issue where it says that an additional 6 hours of on documentation is required. BTW, only 2 hours are required for boundaries. Please advise.Thank you!

Today, I read in Balk Talk that there will be yet another OBCE CE requirement of 6 hours concerning chart noting and documentation. This is in addition to this year's 3 hours concerning sexual boundries.

What needs to happen, for the good of the profession and for the safety of the public, is to weed out the bad apples in our profession. Mandating more CE requirements is not going to change the situation.

If the OBCE is serious about public safety then license suspension and/or revocation is in order concerning major & repeat offenses. That is the only way to send a firm message to the profession and the public as a whole.

A major/minor offense list with a 'X-strike and your out' in a determined time frame would go a long way in terms of correcting offending behaviors and sending strong messages IMO.

Chiropractic is a wonderful profession with much to offer but make no mistake, we are losing the PR battle slowly but surely because we let the bad apples stick around for some odd reason.

" The OBCE is regularly encountering both hand written and electronically

generated chart notes that do not meet minimal standards. In an effort to bring

more Doctors of Chiropractic into compliance, the OBCE will require all Oregon

DCs tocomplete six (6) hours of continuing education in documentation during

2013. "

Thank you for the correction on the 2-hours vs. 3-hours of Boundry Issues CEs.

, I am sorry to say but it is confirmed that  we will be required to take 6 hours of CE in 2013 in documentation, etc.  I believe this info is contained in Ann's letter in Back Talk.  I agree with   that this does get old.

I do not a manditory 2-hour class telling me sexual contact with a patient is

verboten.

What I do need is for my board to hammer on sexual boundry offenders and to

elimate the repeat offenders from the profession.

Without a doubt many DCs need better documentation but the Board mandating

generic requirements really isn't going to help if the bad apples are not delt

with accordingly.

You are obviously in denial. You need to take a class.

I sell classes and I will be vigorously lobbying for the board to increase requirements for everything from boundaries to dermatology.

Bwahahahaha.

It now costs $thousands to get a hair cutting license in California. To cut hair! And we don’t even question it.

We’re the government and we’re here to help you.

BTW: My class includes a valuable interviews with 2 women who have been victims of abuse which was designed to help doctors see how damaging an affair might be but it has an unsuspected benefit:

It helps doctors gain skill in recognizing and communicate effectively with the thousands of people who were abused in the past.

See samples of the course here:

I understand your frustration in thinking the OBCE is off base with this sexual boundary requirement. If I may, I'd like to explain the rationale. When an agency that answers to the governor's office and regulates medical care providers, notices a dramatic rise in an action that harms public safety, they're charged with correcting it. The stats get reported to the Gov's office in regular meetings. The executive directors of all medical licensing boards meet to discuss these and other agency problems. This problem of increased boundary complaints, violations and sanctions with our profession, signals a need to do something. Punishing the offenders alone, will not educate the current population of chiropractors in how to avoid even getting the complaints filed. It becomes necessary to re-educate the population to prevent several things from happening.

1. doctors who are not sexually mistreating patients but who may be engaged in behaviors that bring on complaints, need to be trained in how to avoid complaints. Complaints will generate about 4-6 months of serious mental distress for a doc even if there is no violation found. It costs money to hire attorneys. So it's good to show docs what kind of behaviors brought on the 'no-violation' complaints.

2. doctors who are violating for reasons that may not appear to 'harm' the patient, and in fact the patient may defend the doctor. However, the angry spouse files the complaint.

3. True pedophiles, rapists, sociopaths and others are dealt with. Suspensions, and revocations are handed out for these offenses.

4. Office procedures and paper work that may invite complaints need to be pointed out.

It's all done to prevent trouble for you.

The current videos available to meet this requirement cover many aspects of this. Mine is primarily showing folks how to avoid even getting a complaint filed, but it does cover the other scenarios as well.

Minga, I first thought the same way thought, but since watching 's video I now realize more about how women can see things very differently then how a man thinks, especially a man doctor. I use to go into the room and begin to do what I do as a doctor and never think about these things, until it is to late.. I just do what I do to get what I need done without much thought to how they may think of what I am doing. I do usually explain things ever well in the report of finding, but not these type of things. I have to think now how bending over to do a leg over leg treatment or close move can be very invasive to a patient that does not understand or has no concept of what I am about to do for their low back. I think nothing of it after thousands, but for her it

maybe her first time and what thoughts can arise for her... WOW, what was I "not" thinking or what the patient might be experiencing or thinking in my harsh innocence. I have now stepped back to address my talk each time I approach a female on my table, even as 's tapes says I should bring myself down to her level by sitting or going on my knees to talk to her. There is so much that can be misunderstood. I thank the board for making me take this course and i thank you and to have spent the time putting this all together for us.
